Most Govs In Review Committee Not Paying Minimum Wage

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero, has criticised the committee set up by the federal government to fashion out a new national minimum wage for the country, stating that most governors of the committee are guilty of not complying with the proposed base pay structure.

Vice President Kashim Shettima inaugurated the 37-member committee in Abuja yesterday, saying the decision aimed to ensure a decent living wage and comply with the existing National Minimum Wage Act of 2019, which will expire in a few months.

Speaking on a monitored program, Ajaero said governors who fully comply with the minimum wage are not adequately represented on the committee.

He questioned the motive of the federal government to bring in those who are not compliant to form the bulk of the membership of the minimum wage committee.

The NLC president also criticised the state of the economy, noting that the Labour Congress is helpless in solving the issue.

Nabeeha: Obi Visits Family Of Kidnapped Abuja Sisters

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, recently visited the Al-Kadriyar family to offer his condolences following the harrowing abduction of their six daughters on January 2.

During the visit on Tuesday, Obi expressed deep concerns about the alarming rate of kidnappings in the country and called on the government to take decisive action to address the pervasive insecurity.

While at the family's residence, Obi shared his sympathies and emphasized the need for collective efforts to combat criminal activities. He particularly highlighted the emotional toll on families, stating, "Can you imagine how it feels for a father to lose a young daughter? Imagine Folashade’s family as well. Just imagine the trauma. Imagine what they are going through. The government and the people must work hard to stop this. It is a very sad situation; I don’t know how to start commenting because this happens daily. We can’t continue this way."

The abduction took place at the Sagwari Estate Layout in the Dutsen-Alhaji area of the Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, with 19 individuals, including six girls and their father, Alhaji Mansoor Al-Kadriyar, being taken by bandits. Tragically, the kidnappers released the father but demanded a ransom for the release of his daughters. In the course of the ordeal, four hostages were killed, including Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar, a 400-level student of Biological Science at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and 13-year-old Folashade Ariyo.

On a positive note, the remaining five sisters were freed on Saturday, January 20. The Nigerian Police Force also reported on Sunday that they had apprehended a suspected kidnapper, Bello Mohammed, aged 28, believed to be connected to the abduction and murder of Nabeeha. The incident underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the escalating security challenges in the country.
