Senegal’s Govt Sets March Date for Delayed Presidential Election



Senegal’s council of ministers has announced that the country’s suspended presidential election will take place on 24 March.

The announcement follows tension in the country after President Macky Sall postponed the election last month, sparking widespread protests.

His government had also attempted to postpone the February 25 poll to December, which resulted in widespread protests, and the Constitutional Council later ruled that the presidential election must take place before 2 April.

Earlier on Wednesday evening, Sall dissolved the government and replaced Prime Minister Amadou Ba with Interior Minister Sidiki Kaba.

President Tinubu Congratulates AFDB President Akinwumi Adesina on Award of Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership

President Bola Tinubu has lauded the President, African Development Bank, afdb, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina as a visionary son of the soil.

The president made this known while congratulating Adesina on his award of the Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership.

Represented by vice president Kashim Shettima at the event which held in lagos he commended the AfDB President for his endeavour to transform agriculture in Africa and ensure food security on the continent.

On his part, Adesina spoke on the need to modify governance for development, promising to continue to support agricultural growth.

Adesina becomes the fourth and third Nigerian to bag the award after previous winners such as Nobel Laureate, Professor, Wole Soyinka; former South African President, Thabo Mbeki; and renowned lawyer, Afe Babalola.

Edo Assembly Serves Shaibu Impeachment Notice

The Edo State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against the state deputy governor, Philip Shaibu.

The majority leader, Charity Aiguobarueghian, who announced the impeachment notice during plenary, said the petition dated March 5 was signed by 21 out of the 24 members.

Aiguobarueghian said the number of members who signed the petition is more than the two-third requirement stipulated in the constitution.”

He also said that the petition was based on two grounds: perjury and the revealing of government secrets.

The speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, who acknowledged receipt of the petition, directed the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Omogbai, to serve Shaibu with the impeachment notice.

Agbebaku also gave the deputy governor seven days to respond to the notice of impeachment.

Appeal Court Affirms Abure as LP Chair, Fines Apapa N1m

The Court Of Appeal has affirmed Julius Abure as the Chairman of Labour Party (LP).

Abure has been in a protracted legal conflict with Lamidi Apapa who laid claim to the party’s chairmanship, following the 2023 presidential poll.

The Appellate Court also set aside the decision of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court which last year, restrained Abure and two others from parading themselves as national officers of the party.

In the judgement delivered by Justice Hamma Barka, the Appellate Court held that the high court was wrong to have assumed jurisdiction on the matter.

The Appellate Court also awarded a cost of One million Naira in favour of Abure and against the respondent, Lamidi Apapa.

Speaking after the judgment, National Publicity secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh said the party is open to reconciliation with aggrieved members.
