EFCC To Question Farouk Sadiya Over Alleged N37bn Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) is set to interrogate Sadiya Umar-Farouk, the former minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, regarding an alleged N37.1 billion fraud, as confirmed by a reliable source within the EFCC during a recent telephone interview.

Umar-Farouk held the ministerial position under former President Muhammadu Buhari from August 2019 to May 29, 2023. The anti-graft agency initiated a probe into her activities during her tenure, leading to her invitation last week for questioning.

The investigation focuses on the alleged laundering of N37.1 billion under her supervision, with involvement attributed to a contractor named James Okwete. Subsequently, the former minister was scheduled to appear before EFCC interrogators at their headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, at 10:00 a.m. a week after the invitation.

However, Umar-Farouk has not appeared at the EFCC headquarters, as revealed by an anonymous source, citing the matter's sensitivity. Additionally, the source disclosed that other officials who worked with her have also been invited to shed light on the ministry's affairs during the last four years.

Rivers Speaker’s Resignation Sacrifice For Peace – Fubara

A few days after the resignation of the factional Speaker of the Rivers State, Edison Ehie, Governor Sim Fubara has asserted that the decisions taken by his administration in the lingering political crisis in the state were not borne out of fear, but for peace to reign in the state.

Fubara stated this in an address to dignitaries from the state, including former Governor Peter Odili and his wife, Mary, at the maiden state banquet of his administration at the Government House, Port Harcourt.

The Governor then appealed to the state's people to embrace the ongoing peace process at the instance of President Bola Tinubu.

Fubara added that if the crisis continues, he has nothing to lose, but his consideration is for the state and the citizens.

It would be recalled that Edison Ehie, loyal to Governor Fubara, resigned as lawmaker and Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly amid the crisis between the Governor and his predecessor and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

His resignation letter was dated December 29, 2023, and addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Reaction To Sanwo-Olu Arresting A Soldier, Motorcyclists For Plying One-Way

Many Lagos residents have commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for arresting some commercial motorcyclists, popularly called Okada riders, including a soldier, for driving against traffic on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

The Governor arrested the suspects while returning from Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, where he opened a project sponsored by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Sanwo-Olu, on sighting the traffic offenders, stopped his convoy and went after the riders. While some of the riders ran and left their motorcycles and passengers, some were arrested by the governor’s team.

One of the riders got the governor very furious when he identified himself as a soldier, just as he scolded a female passenger for patronising Okada, who drove against traffic.

Callers on our political programme, All Out Politics, praised the governor for the action but called for strict enforcement of the Okada ban in the state.

Tinubu’s New Year Broadcast ‘Lacks Empathy’ – LP

The Labour Party has described President Bola Tinubu’s New Year’s broadcast to Nigerians as lacking empathy.

President Tinubu urged the citizens not to falter despite their tough times and difficulties in his nationwide broadcast to Nigerians.

Reacting in a statement, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, said the speech conveyed high hypocrisy, deceit and lack of empathy.

The party said it will continue to call on the National Assembly to look beyond party lines and ensure that the spirit and the letter of the Constitution is upheld at all times.

Also, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) described President Tinubu's New Year speech as a “harvest of deceit, false claims and empty promises.”

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, PDP said the speech was uninspiring as it did not address any critical issues plaguing the nation.

According to him, decisions and actions of the Tinubu Presidency, such as the pump price hike from N167 to almost N700 per litre, the naira devaluation, and the failure to address killings across the nation, among others, cannot be said to be in the interest of Nigeria.
