World Bank: Rising Prices Pushed Seven Million Nigerians Below Poverty Line

The World Bank has stated that inflationary pressure in Nigeria has pushed about seven million Nigerians below the poverty line in 2020 alone.

The World Bank gave the data in its latest Nigeria Development Update (NDU), released on Tuesday, a few days after President Muhammadu Buhari in his Democracy Day broadcast claimed on Saturday that his administration had lifted 10.5 million Nigerians out of poverty in the past two years.

The bank’s Country Director for Nigeria, Mr. Shubham Chaudhuri, said lack of economic opportunities was contributing to the rising crime cases and insecurity in Nigeria.

The multilateral institution also reiterated the need for the federal government to set policy foundations for a strong recovery as well as to tame inflation.

The report was released on a day the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced that Nigeria’s Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures inflation dropped to 17.93 per cent (year-on-year) in May compared to 18.12 per cent in the preceding month.

Besides, the World Bank also attributed the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria and rising criminality to a lack of economic opportunities in the country.

The NDU, titled: “Resilience through Reforms,” stated that in 2020, the Nigerian economy experienced a shallower contraction of 1.8 per cent than had been projected at the beginning of the pandemic (3.2 per cent).

It said: “Although the economy started to grow again, prices are increasing rapidly, severely impacting Nigerian households. As of April 2021, the inflation rate was the highest in four years. Food prices accounted for over 60 per cent of the total increase in inflation. Rising prices have pushed an estimated seven million Nigerians below the poverty line in 2020 alone.”

The report acknowledged notable government’s policy reforms aimed at mitigating the impact of the crisis and supporting the recovery, including steps taken towards reducing gasoline subsidies and adjusting electricity tariffs towards more cost-reflective levels, both aimed at expanding the fiscal space for pro-poor spending.

Nollywood Actor Yemi Solade Supports Twitter Ban In Nigeria, Says Platform Insulted Buhari

Solade says Twitter has been used to cause trouble and anarchy in the country.

According to the movie veteran during a chat with GoldmyneTV, the social media platform went too far by insulting the president of the country, Muhammadu Buhari.

"I think Twitter went too far by insulting the President of Nigeria and by extension, insulting all of us, some 200 million Nigerians, the most populous black nation on earth. I think the 45% of subscribers make Twitter very thick," he said.

"This is not the first time Twitter will be trying to humiliate Nigerians. It happened to Pastor Chris Oyakhilome some time ago. The white supremacist should be cubbed sometimes."

According to the movie star, Twitter has been used to foment trouble and anarchy in the country.

"As much as I am of the opinion that everybody has the right of expression of thoughts but then when a platform is used to want to foment trouble, to want to foment anarchy then there should be rules regulating such practices but in this case, a lot happens on Twitter," he added.

"I will want to align with the school of thought that Twitter wasn't really helping. Nigeria has many issues to contend with and Twitter wasn't really helping the country. Most of the posts were far far too negative especially hitting the government of Nigeria. On a wider scale, it really trampled on the fundamental human rights of Nigerians."

Journalists’ Lives Under Threat In Nigeria, Says US

The United States of America has called for the protection of the lives of journalists in Nigeria, saying that threats to journalists have been alarming.

The US Consulate General Public Affairs Officer, Stephen Ibelli, said this while speaking through a Zoom meeting in Uyo during a media workshop on Investigative Health Care Reporting organised by the International Press Centre for journalists in the South-South in collaboration with the US Consulate.

He stated that journalists in the country were working under unfavorable conditions.

He said the US Consulate was ready and willing to support and promote investigative health reports, adding that it had been involved in the promotion and sponsorship of health programmes across the country like USAID.

Ibelli said, “I appreciate International Press Centre for partnering with us. Your presence is an indication of your strong interest to report things on the health sector.

“Nigeria is facing a lot of challenges in the health sector. Since 2003, we have invested over N6bn in fighting HIV/AIDs. I hope the seminar will help you tell the story better.

“Many people look to the media to help tell the story. We will continue to work on the improvement of the training, welfare of journalists and how to combat misinformation. We are particularly concerned about the protection of journalists, and their safety in reporting.”
