Shaibu, Others Boycott Edo PDP Congress, Makinde Dumps Committee

In Edo State, the People’s Democratic Party has conducted an election congress to pick delegates participating in the party’s February 22 governorship primary.

However, yesterday's exercise was trailed by an uproar as nine out of the 11 PDP governorship aspirants boycotted the exercise.

Also, the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, the chairman of the three-person committee in charge of the Edo delegate’s election, withdrew from the exercise.

But the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, who is said to be the committee's deputy chairman, commended the large turnout of party members for the delegates election.

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki described Makinde’s withdrawal from the process as unfortunate but said it would not undermine the credibility of the exercise, which, he said, witnessed a large turnout of party members.

The nine governorship aspirants who boycotted the delegates' election include Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, Anselm Ojezua, and Omosede Igbinedion.

The aspirants wrote a protest letter to the PDP acting national chairman, Umar Damagum. They sent a copy to the National Vice Chairman South-South, Dan Orbih, complaining about the committee's composition in conducting the delegate’s election.

Driver Found Dead, As Kidnapped Ekiti School Children, Staff Regain Freedom

The driver of the bus carrying the kidnapped pupils and staff of the Apostolic Faith Group of Schools died before the victims were rescued.

The driver, identified as Taye Rasaki, was killed by the dare-devil kidnappers.

The pupils were abducted last Monday along Emure-Eporo Road while returning home from school after the kidnappers shot at the bus.

The kidnappers were said to have reached out to the families of the abducted pupils and demanded a N100 million ransom for each of the nine people in their den.

Reports later emerged on Thursday that the abductors reduced the ransom to N15 million for all the abductees while threatening to kill the victims if the money was not paid on time.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Yinka Oyebode, confirmed the development in an interview.

Oyebode expressed optimism about the outcome of the efforts to apprehend the killers of two traditional rulers in the state.

Court Affirms IGP’s Terrorism Charges Against 5 Fubara Loyalists

Five loyalists of Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, facing terrorism charges in Abuja, encountered a setback in their attempt to halt the Inspector General of Police (IGP) from proceeding with their prosecution.

Their application to stop the IGP, asserting that only the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) has the authority to try them on terrorism charges, was dismissed by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon, ruling on their preliminary objections, stated that the defendants were mistaken in claiming that only the AGF could prosecute them. According to the judge, sections 3, 63, and 74 of the Terrorism Prevention Act indicate that although the AGF has the constitutional power to enhance terrorism prevention laws, the same sections do not grant exclusive prosecution rights to the AGF.

Justice Olajuwon emphasised that the Police, under section 5 of the Terrorism Prevention Act, hold the responsibility for intelligence gathering and investigation, with the right to initiate criminal charges in a competent court of jurisdiction. The judge declared the preliminary objections incompetent and lacking merit and subsequently dismissed them.

The five defendants, including Chime Eguma Ezebalike, Prince Lukman Oladele, Kenneth Goodluck Kpasa, Osiga Donald, and Ochueja Thankgod, face terrorism charges. Justice Olajuwon scheduled February 5 for ruling on their bail applications, ordering their return to Kuje Prison in Abuja until a decision is made on whether to grant them bail.
