Tinubu Arrives Niger To Inaugurate Agric Projects, Renamed Airport

President Tinubu has arrived in Niger State for the inauguration of a mechanized agricultural project. During his visit, he is scheduled to inaugurate the Minna International Airport, which has been renamed Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport, Minna, by the state governor, Umar Bago.

This renaming ceremony holds significance as the airport, initially inaugurated by former military Head of State Ibrahim Babangida on June 20, 1990, has undergone significant remodeling under Bago's leadership. The renovation includes a fully furnished domestic terminal, marking a substantial improvement from its previous condition, where it was closed due to a runway issue.

In addition to the airport inauguration, President Tinubu will also oversee the launch of an agro-processing zone and agricultural equipment. The agro-processing zone project will utilize approximately 2,000 hectares of land, with 1,000 hectares allocated for drip irrigation and greenhouses, and the remaining 1,000 hectares designated for dairy product processing. This initiative reflects the state government's commitment to modernizing and enhancing the agricultural sector, thereby contributing to economic development and food security in the region.

Oyo Bans Use Of Styrofoam, Others

On Monday, the Oyo State Government took a decisive step by prohibiting the use of styrofoam for food services, storage, and related purposes, aligning with a recommendation from the state House of Assembly made on February 8, 2024.

To enforce this ban effectively, the government inaugurated the Food Safety Compliance Enforcement Task Force during the Food Safety Stakeholders Forum held at the ministry's conference room in the Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

During the forum, the Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, emphasized the importance of upholding food safety standards as a preventive measure against health hazards. Represented by the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Akintunde Ayinde, Ajetunmobi underscored the urgency to combat food poisoning and other unsafe practices prevalent among food business operators in the state.

Addressing the audience, Ajetunmobi stated, "Prevention is better and cheaper than cure," emphasizing the need for strict adherence to food standards to safeguard lives. She announced the ban on styrofoam usage for food-related activities as part of the government's commitment to ensuring public health.

The newly formed task force is tasked with sensitizing stakeholders along the food chain about the significance of adhering to food safety standards set by the government. Afusat Akande, the director of food, water, and laboratory services, outlined the prerequisites for certification along the food chain, including routine medical fitness certificates and regular fumigation of production premises.

The Permanent Secretary, Ayinde, assured collaboration with the ministry to accomplish its objectives, leading the task force. Comprising members from various organizations, including the state Food Safety Management Committee, the Nigeria Police Force, and associations representing table water producers and canteen workers, the task force is poised to enforce the ban effectively.

This move by the Oyo State Government echoes a similar initiative undertaken by the Lagos State Government in January, which initiated a ban on styrofoam and other single-use plastics across the state. The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this announcement, further highlighting the government's commitment to environmental sustainability and public health.

No Ransom Demand On Abducted Borno Women, Nine Returned – SEMA

Nine out of the 102 internally displaced persons reportedly abducted while fetching firewood in the bush last Sunday in Gamboru-Ngala, Borno State, have returned home.

While the United Nations had condemned the abduction, putting the figure at 200, the Borno State government dismissed the abduction narrative, arguing that they only lost their way back home from the forest.

The Director-General, Borno State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Barkindo Saidu, said if they were abducted, the abductors would have called for ransom, but that’s not the case.

He told the Punch that nine out of the'missing’ IDPs traced their way back to the camp last Friday.

Saidu said the state government has been careful about quoting any number because the authorities do not believe the IDPs, as they can be economical with the truth.

Customs Must Compensate Families Of Lagos Stampede Victims — Falana

Human rights advocate, Femi Falana, urged the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to compensate the families affected by a tragic stampede in Lagos last month.

The incident, which occurred on February 23, 2024, claimed several lives during the rush to purchase subsidized rice sold by the NCS at their Zonal Office in Lagos. Despite the immediate suspension of the food distribution initiative by Customs following the incident, Falana criticized the lack of compensation for the victims' families.

Expressing dismay, Falana highlighted the NCS's failure to identify and offer condolences to the bereaved families, instead attributing blame to the deceased for their supposed impatience. He emphasized the NCS's responsibility for negligence, citing previous stampedes during similar food distributions. Falana argued that the NCS should have foreseen the overcrowding given the significant price difference between the subsidized rice and its market value.

Falana called for urgent steps to identify and compensate the families of the deceased, warning of legal action if necessary to uphold the victims' right to life as guaranteed by Nigerian law and international human rights conventions. Additionally, he urged the NCS to resume rice distribution promptly, suggesting that it be conducted through local government channels to prevent further stampedes.

In his appeal, Falana stressed the importance of accountability and the protection of citizens' rights, urging swift action to address the aftermath of the tragic incident.
