Woman Assaults 19-Year-Old Primary School Student in Anambra

The Anambra State Government, through its Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, has intervened to rescue Chidiebere Otenyi, a victim of domestic abuse residing in Ezinifite, Aguata Local Government Area of the state. The perpetrator, Martha Umenweke, aged in her late 60s, has been apprehended and handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution at the Children, Sexual, and Gender-Based Violence Magistrate Court in Awka. This development was announced in a statement by Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, the media assistant to the Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, on Friday.

According to Ikeanyionwu, the victim was rescued following a report from a whistleblower who witnessed the incident and alerted the ministry. The statement emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring justice for victims of abuse and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.

Chidiebere Otenyi, a 19-year-old from Nkanu, Enugu State, recounted her ordeal, stating that her employer accused her of stealing N25,000, which she denied. This accusation led to severe physical abuse, with Chidiebere enduring maltreatment and starvation during her time with Martha Umenweke.

Further investigation revealed that Chidiebere, despite her age, was still in Primary 3, as her employer had allegedly demoted her from a higher class. Martha Umenweke claimed she punished the maid for theft, but details of the abuse suggested otherwise.

The case has been transferred to the police for a thorough investigation and subsequent prosecution at the Children, Sexual, and Gender-Based Violence Magistrate Court in Awka. This incident echoes a similar case in February involving a lawyer in Anambra State who abused her 11-year-old house help. The matter garnered national attention, prompting government intervention and legal action against the perpetrator.

Tragic Fuel Queue Altercation: Young Man Fatally Shot in Lagos

A young man named Toheeb Eniasa was tragically shot and killed at a petrol station belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited in Obalende, Ikoyi, Lagos State, leading to grief within his family. The incident, which occurred late Wednesday, has left residents in the area shaken.

Eniasa was reportedly in a queue at the petrol station when an altercation arose with two men, believed to be military officers, who attempted to bypass the queue. Witnesses recounted that Eniasa confronted the men, insisting they join the queue like everyone else. The confrontation escalated into a physical altercation, resulting in Eniasa being shot by one of the men, who then fled the scene.

Fuel scarcity has plagued Nigeria in recent days, causing increased transport fares and long queues at filling stations. Eyewitnesses alleged that the officers involved were from the Department of State Services (DSS), based on their branded polo shirts. Residents described chaotic scenes at the petrol station, with vehicles being set on fire and people fleeing in fear. Efforts to reach the station's branch manager for comment were unsuccessful.

The state police public relations officer confirmed the incident, stating that Eniasa was killed and two vehicles were burnt. However, the identity of the shooter remains unknown as investigations continue. In response to the incident, a spokesperson for the DSS denied any involvement of their officers, urging further investigation to uncover the truth.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources in Lagos State, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed on Wednesday the startling revelation of an apartment tucked beneath the Dolphin Estate Bridge in Ikoyi. This clandestine dwelling was found to house tenants paying an annual rent of N250,000.

Wahab revealed that this under-bridge abode comprised 86 partitioned rooms, with dimensions ranging from "10×10" to "12×10". The commissioner disseminated this information via a post on X.com, accompanied by accompanying videos.

Furthermore, he noted the successful removal of all structures, including a container utilized for illicit activities, by the enforcement team of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources from beneath the Dolphin Estate Bridge.

Sharing the videos, the commissioner stated, "A total of 86 rooms, partitioned into 10×10 and 12×10, and a container used for various illegal activities were discovered under the Dolphin Estate Bridge. They have all been removed by the enforcement team of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources."

Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, a Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, corroborated the eviction of illegal settlers from beneath the bridge leading to Dolphin Estate in Ikoyi. He confirmed that 23 individuals were apprehended during the eviction, which was carried out by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) on Tuesday.

He remarked, "Squatters dwelling under the bridge leading from inward Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi were evicted today, Tuesday, 30th of April, 2024 by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps LAGESC (aka KAI). These people created their illegal settlement under the bridge, thereby exposing the critical infrastructure to impending destruction. Twenty-three persons have so far been arrested, and MoE/KAI will continue to monitor the place. The law will take its course."

Rotimi-Akodu also verified that the bridge formerly accommodated 86 rooms, partitioned into 10×10 and 12×10, with squatters paying an average rent of N250,000 per annum.

He added, "The removal of dwellings under Dolphin bridge continues. Eleven more individuals were arrested. It is crucial to note that wooden materials were utilized for constructing the shelters, with some occupants using gas cylinders and storing fuel for their generators, posing potential hazards."

In summary, the eviction operation aimed to clear the area of unauthorized settlements, ensuring the safety of critical infrastructure and enforcing legal standards.
