Bandits Abduct Kogi University Students

Bandits raided the Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, Okene in Kogi State on Thursday night, kidnapping several students as they prepared for upcoming exams. According to an eyewitness, the bandits arrived around 9 pm, entering through the bush and firing shots into the air to create panic among the students studying in three lecture halls. Despite efforts by local security guards and the school's security personnel, the bandits managed to abduct some students before being engaged.

The students, who were gearing up for their first-semester exams set to begin on Monday, May 13, were caught off guard by the attack. Some students sought refuge in the surrounding bush for over an hour until the situation calmed down.

Confirming the incident, CUSTEC Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdulrahman Asipita, acknowledged the situation but declined to provide details on the number of abducted students, stating, "I don't talk to journalists on incidents like this, but I want you to know that we are on top of the situation."

Efforts to contact Kogi Commissioner of Police, Mr Bethrand Onuoha, and Retired Cdre Jerry Omodara, State Security Adviser, were unsuccessful as their calls went unanswered.

Unfortunately, such abductions for ransom have become increasingly common across the country. In February, gunmen abducted nine travelers in Oshokoshoko along the Kabba/Obajana/Lokoja Road in Kogi State.

Rivers Crisis: No Law Stops Fubara From Visiting Assembly Quarters, Says SAN

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Paul Ananaba asserts that Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State did not violate any laws by visiting the state's House of Assembly quarters. Fubara made an impromptu visit to the quarters where the Martin Amaewhule-led members of the legislative body reside.

While Fubara's visit has sparked debates among stakeholders, with some lawmakers suggesting ulterior motives, Ananaba maintains that the governor's actions were within legal bounds. "That facility is a government property. I am not aware of any law that prohibits the governor from visiting the residential quarters," Ananaba stated in an interview on Friday.

Amaewhule, the speaker of a faction of lawmakers, alleged that Fubara's visit was part of a scheme to demolish the assembly quarters, in violation of a court order. He insisted that the quarters were structurally sound and did not require renovation, asserting that the governor was not invited for the visit.

Despite Amaewhule's concerns, Ananaba believes there is no cause for alarm. However, he remarked, "The problem arises when the witch cries at night and a child dies in the morning, creating suspicion that the witch caused the child's death." Ananaba stressed that Fubara's visit would not have been an issue under normal circumstances, attributing the speaker's apprehensions to unfounded fears.

Ananaba attributed the conflict between Fubara and the lawmakers to a lack of political harmony. Following Fubara's visit, some lawmakers have maintained vigilance on the premises, threatening to remain awake throughout the night. Additionally, there are reports of lawmakers beginning to vacate their properties in anticipation of demolition.

Amaewhule is expected to hold a press briefing later in the day to address the situation.

May 9, 2024 Delta State Governor Oborevwori Announces Withdrawal Of Military From Okuama Community

Delta State Governor Oborevwori Announces Withdrawal Of Military From Okuama Community

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State made a significant announcement on Wednesday, declaring the complete withdrawal of military presence from the Okuama community in the state. Speaking at a press conference held at the Government House in Asaba, the governor conveyed that this decision signifies the readiness for the displaced people of Okuama to resume their lives in their homes.

Furthermore, Governor Oborevwori revealed that his administration has established an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp to facilitate the smooth resettlement of the displaced residents of Okuama. This initiative aims to ensure their seamless transition back to their community.

The military had occupied Okuama following the tragic incident on March 14, 2024, where 17 Army personnel lost their lives in the riverine community located in the Ughelli South Local Government Area. This unfortunate event compelled many residents to flee to the creeks and neighboring communities for safety.

The fallen personnel, including the Commanding Officer of 181 Amphibious Battalion, two majors, one captain, and 12 battalion personnel, were laid to rest at the Military Cemetery in Abuja.

With the governor's announcement, it is anticipated that the residents will gradually return to Okuama to rebuild and restore their community.

My Dear Good People of Delta State.

I have the pleasure of announcing to you that upon many deliberations and collaborations between the State Government and the Military Leadership, the Nigerian Army has agreed to withdraw its Officers and men from Okuama. I spoke with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja on Monday, 6th of May, and as of today, 8 of May, 2024, the Military has withdrawn from Okuama. With this development, the people of Okuama can now safely return to their homes and begin the process of reintegration and rebuilding their homes.

I want to express my deep and profound gratitude to Mr. President, the COAS, and the hierarchy of the Nigerian Army for their understanding and cooperation. In my engagements with them, they demonstrated the highest level of concern and care for the plight of the displaced persons. To God be the glory that we have achieved an amicable resolution.

I also extend my gratitude to members of the National Assembly, distinguished Nigerians, our traditional rulers, and other leaders of thought who stood with us in our travails. Your words of encouragement and prayers are greatly appreciated.

Let me assure all Deltans and residents in the state that this administration is irrevocably committed to enhanced peace and security in the state as contained in our MORE agenda. It is also pertinent to point out that matters of security are better handled with tact, wisdom, and patience; it is not meant to be a subject of daily media discuss as some would have wanted.

As the people of Okuama start the process of returning to their homes, I pledge the commitment of the Delta State Government to make that process smooth and seamless. After a personal assessment of the community on 20th of April, 2024, we have since commenced setting up an Internally Displaced Persons camp at Ewu to serve as transition to aid their rehabilitation. We shall render all the necessary assistance they need to enable them settle down quickly and joyfully in Okuama.
