Court Mandates Kano Government to Compensate Deposed Emir Bayero with N10m

A Federal High Court in Kano has ruled that the Kano State Government must pay N10 million in damages to deposed Emir Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero for violating his fundamental rights. The court, having established jurisdiction over Bayero's rights violation case, also mandated the state government to ensure his right to movement and personal liberty.

Justice Simon Amobeda, presiding over Federal High Court 3, emphasized the necessity of jurisdiction in legal proceedings, asserting that any action without it is invalid. He underscored the court's duty to protect citizens' rights, noting that Bayero provided compelling evidence of rights abuses, including a public declaration by the Governor of Kano State in May 2024 that Bayero had been deposed and should be arrested.

The judge condemned the government's actions, stating they constituted unlawful confinement and infringed upon Bayero's constitutional rights to liberty and freedom of movement as guaranteed under Sections 35(1) and 41(1) of the 1999 Constitution. As a result, the court ordered the government to pay N10 million as compensation for breaching Bayero's rights.

Furthermore, the court issued an injunction preventing the police, DSS, and other authorities from arresting or harassing Bayero, ensuring his protection from further rights violations.

Delta Man Fakes Own Kidnapping, Demands N50m Ransom from Parents

The Delta State Police Command has apprehended Nelson Eserada, who allegedly staged his kidnapping, and his accomplice, Jerry Lawrence. SP Bright Edafe, the Command’s spokesperson, disclosed this on Thursday during an interview in Asaba.

Edafe explained that Eserada and Lawrence contacted Eserada’s parents, demanding a ransom of N50 million in Bitcoin. “Following a complaint from Nelson Eserada's father at Abraka Division about his son's kidnapping and the ransom demand, the DPO Abraka SP Fabian Ayameh promptly initiated a technical intelligence-led investigation," Edafe said. "On June 10, 2024, Jerry Lawrence of Jeddo Community, Warri, was arrested in connection with the crime."

The investigation revealed that Eserada, a 400-level Banking & Finance student at Delta State University, Abraka, conspired with Lawrence. Eserada’s father had already paid N5.2 million in ransom through a Bitcoin account linked to Lawrence. The suspects are currently in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.

In related news, the command arrested eight suspected armed robbers who had been terrorizing the Asaba metropolis. The police took action following complaints from residents in Bonsaac, Okwe, and other areas.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, assigned a new DPO to ‘B’ Division, Asaba, with a mandate to identify and arrest those responsible,” Edafe said. “On May 8, 2024, the newly posted DPO, CSP Edewor Akponegware, received credible information about suspicious-looking individuals around the Mango Tree Market, who were armed. The DPO led patrol teams to the scene, resulting in the arrest of John Dalami (25), Musa Suleiman (25), Abdullahi Jibril (20), Solomon Uchechukwu (24), Yusuf Joda (21), Egboka Chukwu Charles (21), and Wisdom Sylvester (21).”

A search at the scene recovered a Bagco bag containing a locally made cut-to-size gun and one live cartridge. The suspects confessed to being involved in a series of house-to-house armed robbery operations in the Issele-Asagba, Coka, and Ibusa areas. Following these confessions, the special Anti-Kidnapping and Cybercrime squad conducted a raid at the suspects' hideout near DDPA estate Asaba, resulting in six additional arrests and the recovery of three locally-made cut-to-size guns.

Terrorists Kidnap Travelers Along Maiduguri-Kano Highway

Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have abducted numerous travelers along the Maiduguri-Kano highway. According to the Daily Trust, the insurgents carried out the abductions on Monday evening between Garin Kuturu and Mannanari village near Auno along the Damaturu highway. The insurgents reportedly blocked the highway, forcefully abducting several passengers, while other commuters had to retreat to Benishek and Auno.

“There was an incident between Mannanari and Garin Kuturu where some Boko Haram fighters came out to block the upcoming vehicles, and some passengers were abducted. We are not sure of the number as we speak, but certainly, there was an abduction on Monday evening,” a source told the newspaper.

Residents recounted that commercial drivers sought refuge in their community during the attack. "They came out with three wheelbarrows, likely looking for foodstuffs. We don’t know how many people were abducted, but some commercial drivers returned to Maiduguri before military reinforcements arrived.”

A passenger, speaking anonymously, said he and others were stranded on the highway for hours. “We were heading for Kano from Maiduguri when the driver got wind of the attack and took a detour. We have been waiting for the military to clear the road, but we don’t know when. We are stranded here.”
