Government Plans Centralized Generator for Lagos Market

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services has announced plans to install a centralized generator in the Lagos Island market to address the recurring issue of market fires. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu highlighted the critical need for collective responsibility in preventing fire disasters.

Speaking at the Lagos International Fire Safety Conference organized by the LSFRS on Tuesday, Governor Sanwo-Olu attributed many fire incidents to careless behavior and urged market traders to be more vigilant. He emphasized that while the government has taken significant steps, such as building fire stations, acquiring 64 fire engines, and recruiting over a thousand fire service personnel, the onus also lies with individuals to prevent fires.

"Fire incidents in the state are largely due to irresponsible behavior or carelessness. Despite the government's efforts, including building fire stations and increasing the number of fire engines and personnel, it is crucial that everyone understands their role in fire prevention," said Sanwo-Olu. He called on market leaders to ensure safety practices are followed, noting that improper storage of petrol and unsafe use of generators are common issues.

Margaret Adeseye, Director of LSFRS, also stressed the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to find lasting solutions to fire incidents. She revealed plans to introduce a centralized generator in the Lagos Island market, which will eliminate the need for individual generators and reduce fire risks.

"Lagosians should come together as stakeholders because fire prevention and safety is everybody’s business. We need to strategize and look at solutions holistically," said Adeseye. She explained that a committee is working to reposition the Lagos Island market, and the introduction of a centralized generator is part of this effort.

Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Olugbenga Oyerinde, reaffirmed the administration's commitment to fostering collaboration and partnerships with relevant organizations, corporate bodies, individuals, and experts in emergency management and fire disaster prevention.

The conference aims to develop strategies and solutions for reducing fire incidents, ensuring a safer environment for all Lagos residents.

Solidarity March in Support of Wike by Amaewhule, Obio/Akpor Leaders in Rivers Politics

Top political leaders from various wards of Obio/Akpor are currently marching in solidarity with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. As of this report, the protesters are gathered at the Rumueme Civic Center in Port Harcourt, led by prominent figures such as the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Ogundu Chinda, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and former Council Chairman, George Ariolu.

The protesters are demanding that the Inspector General of Police continue to occupy the councils and resist any form of intimidation. The march, taking place along Ikwerre Road, has caused significant traffic congestion.

This show of support for Wike follows a recent protest by IPO community women who barricaded the Port Harcourt airport, leaving passengers stranded amid the escalating political crisis in Rivers State.

Addressing the crowd, Ariolu emphasized their support for peace and order in the state. He stated, "As the governor said, there is no sacrifice too much for peace. But there is no peace without justice. You must govern by the rule of law. Therefore, we support governance by law, not by discretion or impunity. Rivers is a state that complies with law and order. We support the position of the Nigerian police. The inspector general under President Tinubu has the right to bring peace to Rivers State, even in the face of provocative actions that could lead to a breakdown of law and order.

"We encourage the inspector general and his men to continue maintaining peace and order in Rivers State. We call on everyone to abide by the rule of law. Public officeholders must understand that they must obey the law. As a community, we are taking a peaceful walk this morning to talk to the people and demonstrate our support for peace and order."
