North Central Youths Pull Out Of Planned Nationwide Protest

Over 60,000 youths, represented by the Arewa Integrity Group for Good Governance in the North Central region, have decided not to participate in the planned nationwide protest on August 1.

The Federal Government held several meetings with youth groups, urging them to postpone the protests to give President Bola Tinubu’s administration time to implement people-oriented programs.

In a statement released in Lafia, Nasarawa State capital, the group's leader, Joseph Maiwada, explained their decision to withdraw from the protest on Friday. He emphasized their desire to allow the government to address citizens' needs and maintain peace in the region and the country.

Maiwada also cited appeals from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who is from the North Central region, as another reason for their decision.

“The Secretary to the Government of the Federation has appealed to notable youth groups and some pressure groups around the North Central zone of the country, and he has reassured us of the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of the citizens,” the statement read.

Maiwada affirmed their willingness to appease their members, highlighting that the SGF has consistently supported their cause. “We have mobilized over 60,000 members of the group to withdraw from the protest to ensure that we all continue to live in peace and unity in the country,” he stated.

He advised other protest organizers to reconsider their plans, noting the detrimental effects of past protests on citizens and their livelihoods. Instead of protesting, Maiwada urged youths to support the federal government's efforts to tackle the country's socio-economic challenges.

Protest: Lagos Government Declares Non-Involvement in Oro Festival and Other Religious Activities

The Lagos State Government has distanced itself from the rumored upcoming Oro festival scheduled for August 1 to 15, coinciding with the #EndBadGovernance protest.

The government likened it to other religious activities held across the country.

In a telephone conversation, Gboyega Akosile, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the state’s Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said no one questions the government when other religions hold their activities.

He noted that the same respect should be maintained for traditional worshippers because they have the right to worship according to the constitution and can go about their lawful exercises.

“Oro festival is like Muslim and Christian activities and has no business with Lagos State government interference. We don’t know how any religious group goes about their lawful activities.

“The protesters have their rights just like the traditional worshippers who want to perform their activities too. What is our business in that?” he queried.

NPF Denies Selling Falomo Barracks In Lagos, Unveils Redevelopment Plans

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, clarified that no police barrack has been sold in Lagos State. In a statement on Tuesday in Lagos, Adejobi emphasized that the police are undertaking comprehensive renovations of several police barracks in the state.

He addressed the situation to correct misinformation circulating on social media, which suggested that the Falomo Barracks in Ikoyi, Lagos, had been sold.

"The Nigeria Police Force must address the baseless discussions about the state of police barracks and their redevelopment, particularly the Falomo Barracks and others in Lagos," Adejobi stated.

He acknowledged the public's concern for the welfare of police personnel and aimed to provide clear information about the allegations. Due to the poor condition of several police barracks, including Falomo Barracks, the NPF leadership initiated a partnership with sub-national governments and reputable developers to enhance the barracks. The goal is to transform them into more suitable and modern accommodations.

Adejobi explained that the redevelopment would include modern infrastructure and complementary facilities. Once completed, the occupants of the redeveloped barracks, including Falomo Barracks, would be offered new accommodation on the same sites.

Specifically, occupants of Falomo Barracks Blocks A and B have received ₦2 million each as a temporary relocation allowance. This payment has been made to 347 families after a validation process to facilitate their temporary relocation.

"This initiative is not limited to Falomo Barracks alone. Similar redevelopment projects will be carried out across all police barracks nationwide over time," he added.

Adejobi highlighted that this project is a strategic effort to improve the living conditions of officers and their families, which is a key focus of the current police administration.
