Lagos Protesters Defy Court Order with Street Procession

Despite a court order restricting the #EndBadGovernance protests in Lagos to specific venues, demonstrators held street processions in the commercial capital. On Wednesday, a Lagos High Court granted an ex parte application filed by the State's Attorney General, Lawal Pedro (SAN), to confine the protests to Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota and Peace Park in Ketu.

Justice Emmanuel Ogundare issued an interim injunction restricting the protests in Lagos from August 1-10, except in the two approved locations from 8 am to 6 pm. However, on Thursday, defiant protesters marched through Alausa to Ojota, singing solidarity songs and highlighting citizens' plights.

The protesters carried placards with various messages, such as ‘Reverse electricity tariff now,’ ‘Stop corporate capture,’ ‘We need a new mass workers party to change Nigeria,’ and ‘This hunger is too much.’

During a briefing in Alausa, the demonstrators condemned the country's hunger and economic situation. The Divisional Police Officer of Alausa, Tokunbo Abaniwonda, was present and advised the protesters to move to Gani Fawehinmi Park, as Alausa was not a designated protest location.

Gunmen Kill Four Police Officers and Woman in New South-East Attack

Gunmen have killed four police operatives and a woman in Imo State, South-East Nigeria. The attack occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Monday along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Owerri, the state capital.

According to local shop owner Tony Onwumelu, the assailants struck the police checkpoint near Blossom Hotel, killing the four officers. They also fired at passers-by, resulting in the death of a woman who operated a POS business at the junction. She was shot at close range.

Another witness, who wished to remain anonymous, suggested that the attackers might be enforcers of the illegal sit-at-home order due to their indiscriminate shooting. The area has recently seen a rise in gunmen attacks.

A video circulating on WhatsApp shows the aftermath of the attack, with the POS operator's body lying in a pool of blood near her table and chairs. The bodies of the police operatives were also visible—two on the ground and two in their Hilux pickup truck, one in plain clothes.

Imo State Police spokesperson Henry Okoye confirmed the killings, attributing the attack to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The operatives were ambushed while on routine patrol at Irete on the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway.

Police Commissioner Aboki Danjuma condemned the attacks as "gruesome" and has mobilized tactical units and intelligence resources to track down the perpetrators. Security in Imo State has been deteriorating, with frequent attacks targeting security agencies, government officials, and facilities.

This attack follows a similar incident exactly one month prior, where six people were killed in Okigwe Local Government Area. The Nigerian government has accused IPOB of being behind these attacks, although the group has consistently denied involvement. IPOB is advocating for an independent Biafra, separate from the South-East and parts of South-South Nigeria.

Osun Residents Protest SIM Blockage, Creating Traffic Gridlock

On Monday, frustrated residents of Osun State blocked the Oke Fia/Dele-Yes-Sir dual carriageway in Osogbo, the state capital, in protest against MTN officials for allegedly not attending to them promptly after their mobile lines were barred.

Residents, who had traveled from various towns across the state to the MTN Connect Store in Osogbo, expressed their frustration. Despite arriving as early as 1:00 am, many were not attended to promptly. In their anger, the residents blocked the road, causing traffic disruptions and forcing drivers to find alternate routes.

Order was restored when Department of State Security (DSS) operatives arrived and directed the protesters to clear the barricade. At the MTN Connect Store, those who had registered their names on Saturday were being attended to, while new arrivals were compiling their names. Elderly, sick, and pregnant individuals were allowed inside the premises to wait for their turn.

Our correspondent observed a DSS vehicle with about five operatives parked beside the MTN premises. During interviews, a resident from Ikire, Mrs. Korede, shared her frustration about the long wait despite arriving at 5:00 am. She noted that 114 people had registered before her, even though she did not see any list.

A commercial motorcyclist from Ikirun recounted his experience, explaining that he came to Osogbo hoping to avoid the large crowds at the MTN office in his town. However, he found a significant crowd and joined the protesters who blocked the road from 7:00 am until DSS operatives intervened around 9:00 am.

Efforts to speak with the senior officer in charge at the Osogbo MTN Connect Office were unsuccessful, as those approached claimed not to be employees of the organization.
