Borno Flood: Evacuation of Bodies and Trapped Residents Begins in Maiduguri

Thousands of families stranded in flooded areas of Maiduguri are currently being evacuated to safer locations by the military, volunteers, and other security agencies.

During a visit to the most severely affected parts of the city, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, toured the Customs area, which includes the location of a damaged prison. The tour also witnessed the grim evacuation of bodies, while military personnel, security agencies, and civilian volunteers worked tirelessly to rescue those still trapped by the floods.

Although some areas of Maiduguri have seen the floodwaters recede, others, such as Gamboru Market, Kasuwan Shanu, Custom Area, Fori, and Abbaganaram, remain under water. The Nigerian prison premises are still flooded, with public infrastructure, shops, and vehicles completely submerged.

Aerial footage and images shared by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and verified by AFP depict rows of homes engulfed in murky floodwaters. Maiduguri, already an epicenter of over a decade-long jihadist insurgency, now faces an additional challenge as it serves as a hub for humanitarian responses in the flood-stricken northeast region.
