Kebbi State Government Approves ₦75,000 Minimum Wage for Civil Servants

The Kebbi State Government has officially approved a new minimum wage of ₦75,000 for its civil servants. This announcement followed the presentation of the Minimum Wage Committee’s report, which had been commissioned by the governor.

The news brought relief to Kebbi State workers, who had long anticipated a salary increase, especially after the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Federal Government agreed on a ₦72,000 minimum wage. Kebbi's new wage surpasses the federal minimum wage slightly.

During the announcement, attended by national leaders of the NLC, including President Joe Ajaero, the Secretary to the State Government, Yakubu Bala, explained that the decision was the outcome of extensive discussions between state officials and the labour union. Both parties ultimately settled on the ₦75,000 figure.

Governor Nasir Idris, a former labour leader, emphasized that the welfare of Kebbi workers is a top priority for his administration. After signing the new wage into law, he confirmed that the increased salary would take effect starting with the October pay, with payments to be made within 72 hours.

NLC President Joe Ajaero commended the governor for his commitment to workers’ welfare, contrasting it with other state governors who, despite higher oil revenues, have only approved minimal wage increases. He vowed that the NLC would continue pushing for fair wages in other states.

NLC leaders and workers celebrated the decision with solidarity songs, showing their appreciation for the governor's pro-labour stance.

Beggar Eviction to Begin in FCT on Monday — Wike

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has issued a stern warning to roadside beggars, urging them to stop or face arrest by enforcement agents. This announcement was made by the FCT Minister during the flag-off ceremony for the construction of access roads to the newly initiated judges’ quarters in Katampe.

The minister expressed concern over the alarming number of people begging on the streets, noting that their presence poses a security threat to the metropolis. He then set a deadline of October 27, 2024, for those involved to vacate the streets.

During the same event, the minister recalled revoking the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) of several plots of land allocated to Julius Berger, the German construction company, in Katampe District.

The ceremony marked the official launch of the Design and Construction of 40 Judges' Quarters in Abuja, an event attended by dignitaries including the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem.

Wike also revealed that 70% of the project funds had already been released following its approval by the Federal Executive Council. Of the 40 units to be constructed, 20 will be allocated to the FCT High Court, 10 to the Federal High Court, and 10 to the Court of Appeal.

Students Ignite Blaze at Kebbi College Provost’s Residence Amid Allegations of Extortion

Students at the College of Health Sciences and Technology, Jega, Kebbi State, set fire to the residence of the provost, Alhaji Haruna Saidu-Sauwa, and vandalized his vehicle in a violent protest over alleged extortion.

The unrest stemmed from accusations that the college management extorted N23 million from 250 graduating students for index registration. The controversy revolved around a new public health program that was originally affiliated with the Reproductive Health and Public Health Association of Nigeria. The program was later merged with the Department of Environmental Health to secure certification, prompting the school to demand an additional N65,000 from each student for index registration, on top of the N30,000 already paid.

Angry students, accusing the management of extortion, responded by stoning vehicles and setting the provost’s home ablaze.

In response, Provost Sawwa denied the allegations, calling them "fictitious, baseless, and mischievous." He dismissed claims that he had collaborated with an external body to extort money from the students, stating that all school fees were paid directly into the Treasury Single Account (TSA), which neither he nor anyone else had personal access to.

Kebbi State Police Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed the situation and promised further details after receiving a report from the Divisional Police Officer in Jega. Order was restored at the college after security forces intervened and dispersed the protesters.
