Zamfara Governor Matawalle Sacks All Commissioners, Suspends Traditional Rulers

The Emir of Dansadau, Hussaini Umar, as well as the District Head of Nasarawa Mailayi, Bello Wakkala have been suspended and will be investigated.

The governor adds in a statement that "the Secretary to the State Government, Chief of staff and Deputy chief of staff are relieved of their duties. All chairmen, members of the state commission and boards of various agencies are hereby dissolved

"All commissioners are directed to hand over affairs of their ministries to their respective permanent secretaries. Ministry of Security and Home Affairs is to be overseen by rtd DIG Mohammed Ibrahim Tsafe with immediate effect.

"Chairmen of commissions and boards are hereby directed to handover to their most senior directors. The Head of service is to oversee the office of the SSG."

The governor adds that"the Emir of Dansadau is under investigation. Consequently, he is suspended with immediate effect.

"The district head of Dansadau is to oversee the affairs of the emirate. The district head of Nassarawa Mailayi is also suspended with immediate effect."

Zamfara has been battling a spate of banditry and abductions.

The traditional leaders have allegedly been suspended for their roles in the escalating banditry in the state, amid a declaration by President Buhari that all bandits wielding AK-47 guns should be shot on sight.

NDLEA Arrests Student, Graduates With Illicit Drugs At Abuja Airport

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested a 23-year-old secondary school leaver and an European based Nigerian with various illicit drugs at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, (NAIA), Abuja.

Babafemi said that the suspects, Iwuyi Princewill Chukwuka and Peter Mkwo were to export nine kilogrammes of skunk and methamphetamine from the (NAIA), Abuja to Turkey and Belgium respectively.

He said that Mkwo, 37, was arrested on May 28, while trying to board an Ethiopian Airline 910 enroute Abuja-Addis Ababa-Brussels, Belgium.

The spokesperson said that upon searching, three kilogrammes of methamphetamine was discovered stuffed in the lining of a false bottom of his luggage.

Under interrogation, Mkwo claimed he has lived in Belgium for 15 years and worked as a forklift driver in an automobile company, where he earned 1,700 Euro per month.

“He said he came into Nigeria on April 26 for the burial of his father who died in August, 2019 but buried on April 30, in Awka, Anambra State.

“He said that after spending two weeks in Awka, he travelled to Uyo for another week to see his sister and later to Lagos to see his girlfriend.

Mkwo claimed that he lodged in a hotel at Amuwo Odofin in Lagos where he met two men while hanging at the bar by the hotel’s swimming pool where they made a proposal to him to carry the drug for onward delivery to Belgium.

“He said that the bag containing the drug was brought to him in the hotel by the two men on Friday, May 28, before he took off to Abuja where he was to take his flight to Brussels.

“He said he was promised (£3,000) on successful delivery to one Ishmael, in Belgium.

He claimed he accepted the offer to deliver the drug to raise some funds to pay back the money he borrowed from friends during the burial of his father.

In the same vein, Babafemi said that the 23-year-old Chukwuka was arrested with 6.3kg skunk concealed in crayfish.

Babafemi said that it was stuffed inside Golden Morn packs during an outward clearance of Turkish airline flight at the departure hall of the Abuja airport.

“During interrogation, he claimed he was travelling for a Diploma study in Tourism and Hotel Management at University of Mediterranean, Karpasia, North Cyprus,’’ he said.

In a related development, a 27-year-old graduate of accountancy, Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Zakaru Baba has been arrested at the local wing of the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, (MAKIA), Kano with Six kilogrammes of cannabis sativa.

Babafemi said that the consignment was flown from Lagos to Kano on May 29 via Max Air.

He said that the suspect, who turned up to claim the packaged drug, was arrested and had since confessed ownership of the exhibit.

“This is the first time the command has apprehended a suspect via the domestic wing of the airport, as most arrests and seizures are usually made at the international wing,’’ he said.

Babafemi quoted the Chairman, NDLEA, retired, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa as commending the NAIA Commander, Kabir Tsakuwa, and his MAKIA counterpart, Mohammed Ajiya, as well as the officers and men of the two commands for their vigilance.

He commended their commitments to the task of ridding the country of illicit substances and charged them not to rest on their oars as the agency intensified the war against drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria.

NECO Registrar Godswill Obioma Is Dead

There is confusion over the cause of his death.

There is still some confusion surrounding Obioma's death, with one report saying he was assassinated, while another report details that he slumped in his bedroom in Minna, Niger State yesterday, after an official trip to Abuja and was rushed by his wife and other relatives back to National Hospital, Abuja where he eventually died.

A police spokesperson did not immediately return requests for comments.

A statement from Mustapha Abdul, Director of Human Resource Management at NECO says "Obioma died after a brief illness." Abdul also asks "staff to remain calm."

67-year-old Obioma from Abia State was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari to head NECO on May 14, 2020.

Eko Bridge Will Be Closed For 2 Months

Motorists and residents have been asked to obey all traffic diversion directives.

Commissioner for Transportation, Frederic Oladeinde, says the repair work has become imperative in order to complete an earlier rehabilitation work embarked upon by the federal government.

The bridge will be closed from Costain to Alaka inbound the National Stadium in Surulere.

Oladeinde says “Traffic from Apongbon to Alaka, Stadium, Inner Surulere or Ikorodu Road will be diverted to Eko Bridge to access Costain Roundabout to Iponri through Alaka and Funso Williams Avenue.

“Similarly, motorists from Eko bridge will have to navigate their desired destinations through Costain Roundabout to Abebe Village( by Nigerian Breweries Plc) through Eric Moore to Bode Thomas to Adeniran Ogunsanya, to access Shitta Roundabout by Stadium under bridge to Funso Williams Avenue to Dorman-Long Bridge and Fadeyi-Ikorodu Road.

“Motorists can gain access to Apongbon through CMS Outer Marina Road to connect Ebute Metta Ikorodu Road to access their destinations.

“Motorists from Apongbon can pass through CMS to Outer Marina to Adeniji Adele, Third Mainland Bridge, Adekunle to Herbert Macaulay Way, Jibowu and Ikorodu road will also be available.”

The Lagos state government has appealed for understanding from residents.

Lagosians have also been asked to obey traffic management personnel during this 10-week fix of the bridge.
