Lagos Teacher Sentenced To Life Imprisonment For Defilement

Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sentenced head teacher Benjamin Ogba to life imprisonment on Tuesday for defiling two seven-year-old girls. The judge ruled that the prosecution had proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt, with sufficient evidence of defilement.

In her judgment, Justice Soladoye dismissed the testimonies of the defense as false, labeling Ogba a “serial paedophile” and describing his defense as a “pack of lies.”

“The convict and his witnesses were not truthful or credible. Their testimonies crumbled like a pack of cards,” she said. “This head teacher, who should be a moral guide for students, stooped so low as to defile underage girls. His behavior is shameful and disgraceful. He must be locked away.”

The judge commended the two young survivors for their bravery in speaking up against their abuser, emphasizing the importance of reporting sexual abuse rather than remaining silent. She urged parents to continue reporting such cases to the appropriate authorities and stressed the need for ongoing education and awareness on sexual abuse.

“Education and awareness of this sexual menace must be priorities for all stakeholders in the justice system to protect the rights of children,” she added.

Ogba was found guilty on two counts of defilement and sentenced to life imprisonment for each count, to be served concurrently. His name will also be entered into Lagos State’s Sex Offenses Register.

During the trial, the prosecution, led by Mr. Olusola Soneye, called three witnesses, while the defense presented four. The court heard that Ogba committed the offences in April and May 2019 at Shalom Private School, Oke-Ira Road, Ebutte Metta, Lagos. One of the victims informed her mother, leading to a police report and the eventual prosecution. The offence contravenes Section 137 of the Lagos State Criminal Laws of 2015.

Police Remain Silent as Thugs Attack Rivers LG Secretariats

The Rivers State Police Command has remained notably silent in the face of violent unrest that erupted at several local government council secretariats on Monday morning. Reports indicate that suspected "political thugs," allegedly supporters of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, attacked the Obio/Akpor, Ikwerre, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Eleme, and Emohua local government secretariats. This occurred less than 24 hours after Governor Sim Fubara swore in newly elected local government chairmen.

The attackers reportedly barricaded the entrances to the councils and fired shots indiscriminately, seemingly aiming to prevent the newly elected officials from assuming their duties. On the same day, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun ordered the immediate withdrawal of police personnel from the 23 local government secretariats in Rivers State after more than three months of deployment.

In Bori, Khana Local Government Area, a gunfight ensued as armed men opened fire on members of a political party, leading to an exchange of gunfire between the assailants and police. Reports indicate that the Bori Police Division recovered the body of a civilian who was killed during the confrontation.

In Eleme, arsonists set fire to the local council in a bid to block the new chairman from taking office. Heavy gunfire was also reported in Obio/Akpor, where attackers sought to disrupt the inauguration of councilors by the local government chairman. A viral video showed the Ikwerre LG secretariat engulfed in flames, while in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, plastic chairs were scattered at the entrance of the secretariat due to the unrest.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that at least three people have died amid the chaos across Obio/Akpor, Khana, and Ahoada East LGAs. Despite numerous calls for intervention, the state police command has yet to address the situation or take decisive measures to restore order and security at the affected secretariats.

Fire Razes Section of Eleme Local Government Secretariat in Rivers State

A section of the Eleme Local Government Council secretariat was set ablaze. According to former Ambassador Oji Ngofa, a native of Eleme, the newly elected chairman, Brain Gokpa, arrived at the secretariat with his councilors and supporters only to find part of the council buildings engulfed in flames.

Despite the fire, Gokpa and his team have vowed to assume control of the secretariat. Tensions also flared in Emohua, where unknown individuals barricaded the secretariat entrance, preventing the new chairman, David Omereju, from resuming office. In a circulating social media video, protesters chanted, “No Wike, No Rivers State!!”

No arrests have been made yet, and the police have not issued a statement, raising fears of potential violence in several councils across the state. The arson incident follows the recent Rivers Local Government Elections, dominated by the Action Peoples Party (APP).

Meanwhile, a disagreement erupted in Ahoada Local Government Area on Monday after the police unsealed the council secretariats under orders from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP). Reports indicate that police officers fired shots into the air to disperse individuals attempting to prevent the new chairman of Ahoada East LGA from taking office.

This unrest comes just days after the APP won 22 out of 23 LGAs in the election, with the Action Alliance (AA) securing only one.

IGP Orders Reopening of Rivers LGA Secretariats After Fubara Swears In APP Leaders

The Rivers State Police Command has reopened all 23 Local Government Area Secretariats in the state following the recent election and swearing-in of new chairmen.

This was confirmed in a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, on Monday morning. She noted that the newly deployed Commissioner of Police, CP Mustapha Bala, acting on the directives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, ordered the immediate withdrawal of police personnel who had previously sealed and secured the council secretariats.

The secretariats were initially sealed in June due to a disagreement between the Caretaker Committee Chairmen loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the former local government chairmen, who were aligned with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This development followed Governor Fubara's swearing-in of 23 newly elected local government chairmen. The ceremony, held on Sunday at the Executive Council Chambers of the Government House in Port Harcourt, took place a day after the Rivers State Independent National Electoral Commission (RSIEC) conducted elections at the grassroots level.

POLICE ORDERS UNSEALING OF LGA SECRETARIATS, WITHDRAWAL OF DEPLOYED PERSONNEL WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT

In view of the recent political developments in Rivers State, the newly deployed Commissioner of Police, CP Bala Mustapha, hereby conveys the directives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, for the immediate withdrawal of all police personnel previously deployed to seal and safeguard the Local Government Secretariats in the state. This decision is in line with the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to ensure neutrality and the smooth functioning of democratic institutions.

Consequently, the IGP has ordered the unsealing of the Local Government Secretariats, which were earlier secured by police personnel. The police will only be redeployed to these locations in the event of any crisis or breakdown of law and order, in which case emergency measures will be swiftly implemented to restore normalcy.

The Rivers State Police Command assures the public of its readiness to maintain peace and order across the state and will continue to act professionally in discharging its duties. We urge all residents and stakeholders to remain calm and law-abiding as the situation evolves.
