Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has become the third player in a week to have racist abuse directed at him on social media following a penalty miss.

France player Pogba, 26, had a second-half penalty saved during united’s one all draw with wolves on Monday.

On Sunday, Reading striker Yakou Meite called out racist abuse sent via social media after his spot-kick was saved.

Last week, Chelsea condemned ‘abhorrent posts’ aimed at Tammy Abraham after his Super Cup final miss against Liverpool.

Blues boss Frank Lampard said he was disgusted by the abuse aimed at the 21-year-old England forward and suggested social media companies must do more to stop players being targeted.

Ivory Coast forward Meite, 23, came on as a substitute against Cardiff and missed a 91st-minute penalty.

Others fans quickly condemned the tweets containing racist abuse that were sent to Pogba – who won the penalty he then missed – shortly after full-time at Molineux on Monday.

Some tweets were later deleted while several accounts appeared to have been taken down.

Twitter’s terms and conditions say it “takes action against behaviour that targets individuals with hateful conduct”.

In July, anti-racism charity Kick It Out produced a report that showed reports of racist abuse increased by 43% last season, with 274 cases compared with 192 the previous season.

I can still play for Nigeria – Abraham

Chelsea forward, Tammy Abraham, says he has not closed the door on playing for the Super Eagles.

The forward, who has two caps for the Three Lions in friendly games, was quoted by aclsports.com as saying he had not ruled out the possibility of switching allegiance.

“Anything is still possible. I have not ruled it out completely, but we will see,” he told aclsports.com.

If he eventually turns up for the Eagles, he will join the likes of Victor Moses and Sola Ameobi as players who dumped the Three Lions for the Eagles.

Moses played for the England U-16, U-17, U-19 and U-21 teams before playing for the Eagles in 2012.

Ameobi was also part of the Eagles squad to the 2014 World Cup, after earlier making his debut in a friendly game against Venezuela, November 14, 2012.

He also featured for the England U-21 team.

12th African Games: Igali charges wrestlers to give ‘best efforts’ in Morocco

President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) Hon. Daniel Igali has charged the country’s wrestlers and coaches to the 12th African Games in Morocco to ‘give your best efforts’ when hostilities resume in the Northern African Nation.

Igali gave this charge at the unveiling ceremony of Nigeria’s wrestling team to the quadrennial multi-sport event which took place in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State recently.

A total of 16 athletes (6 females and 10 males) and 5 coaches, as well as 2 officials, will fly Nigeria’s flag in wrestling at the Games in three styles; Women Wrestling, Freestyle and Greco Roman, and the Olympic champion believes their ‘best efforts’ will bring glory to the country.

“My charge to the athletes and to the coaches is what we practice on the mat – to go out and give your best effort. You can’t do better than that,” Igali, a Commissioner Designate in Bayelsa State said. “Nobody can do better than their best effort on the mat.

“If an athlete leaves the mat, and feels that they could have done more, they’ve cheated themselves. And that is our philosophy on the mat and that’s how we train”.

So, that is the same echo, that is the same reminder that I will give to the athletes and also to the coaches who will be by their side, to remind them constantly to leave everything on the mat.”

Responding on behalf of the athletes, captain of the men’s team and 5-time African champion Amas Daniel promised that the wrestlers will give their all in Morocco to ensure they bring glory back home.

“We will put in our 100% (effort) when we get to Morocco. And when we go out to fight, we will give our 100%, believing that our 100% will not bring bronze, will not bring silver, but will bring gold medals,” Amas promised.

At the last edition of the African Games in Brazzaville, Congo, 23 Nigerian wrestlers won 19 medals (9 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze medals).

The contingent is expected to depart the shores of Nigeria for Morocco on Wednesday, 21st August.

Hoeness confirms he will step down as Bayern president

Uli Hoeness has confirmed he is stepping down as president of Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and will not stand for re-election in November.

The 67-year-old told German daily Bild at a golf tournament on Sunday that he will remain on the board at Bayern, “but will relinquish my presidency when the time comes”.

That means Bayern members will vote for a new head of the defending Bundesliga champions at the annual general meeting in November with Hoeness to step down as head of the club’s board.

After 40 hugely successful years in charge, Hoeness will hand over the reins and former Adidas boss Herbert Hainer, currently his deputy on the club’s board, is widely tipped as his successor.

Since Hoeness first took charge in 1979, Bayern have enjoyed phenomenal success — claiming the Bundesliga trophy 24 times, the German Cup on 14 occasions and lifted the Champions League trophy in 2001 and 2013.

After a knee injury forced the West Germany international into retirement, Hoeness became general manager in 1979 and was promoted to club president in 2009.

Bayern opened the new German league season on Friday with a disappointing 2-2 draw at home to Hertha Berlin as two Robert Lewandowski goals bailed the hosts out of trouble at the Allianz Arena.

However, reinforcements have been signed with both Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho, from Barcelona, and forward Ivan Perisic, from Inter Milan, joining on loan deals.

Hoeness joined Bayern as a player in 1970, retiring nine years later to manage the club and has overseen its fortunes ever since — apart from two years in jail for tax evasion, from June 2014 to February 2016.
