Nigerians Will Buy Petrol At N234 Per Litre, Sooner Or Later – NNPC

Kyari says the NNPC pays between N100 billion and N120 billion a month to keep the pump price at the current levels.

The Group Managing Director of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation NNPC, Mele Kyari, says the corporation can no longer bear the over N120 billion monthly subsidy for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

Kyari stated this during the weekly media briefing organized by the Presidential Communication Team at the State House, Abuja, on Thursday.

According to him, the actual cost of importation and handling charges amounts to N234 per litre, while the government is selling at N162 per litre.

He added that the NNPC absorbs the cost differential which is recorded in its financial books.

Kyari, however, said that since NNPC could no longer bear the cost, sooner or later Nigerians would have to pay the actual cost for the commodity.

According to the GMD, the NNPC pays between N100 billion and N120 billion a month to keep the pump price at the current levels.

He said that market forces must be allowed to determine the pump price of petrol in the country.

Our current consumption (evacuation) from our depots is about 60million litres per day. We are selling at N162 a litre. Current market price is 234, actual market price today.

“The difference between the two, multiply by 60million, times thirty, will give you per month.

This is a simple calculation you do. If you want exact figures from our book, I do not have it from this moment but it’s between N100billion and N120billion per month.

“We are putting the difference in the books of NNPC and we cannot continue to bear,’’ he said.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, who also spoke at the event, expressed the hope that the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) would be passed into law in April.

According to him, frantic efforts are being made by the legislators to complete work on the bill and pass it, in line with the aspirations of critical stakeholders in the petroleum sector.

The National Assembly has expressed the intent to pass the PIB into law by April 2021, every effort is being made to support the National Assembly to meet this target,” he said.

While enumerating the gains of the PIB to Nigerians, the minister said it would create additional infrastructure across petroleum value chain.

He added that it would increase petroleum activities as well as enhance the livelihood of inhabitants of oil producing communities.

He said the bill would create additional infrastructure across the petroleum value chain especially from mid-stream and down-stream.

He added that critical infrastructure would also be developed, while utilizing the incremental revenue from increased petroleum activities.

Sylva said it would also provide additional infrastructure in the host communities arising from the host community trust.

The minister further stated that more businesses would be set up to support increased activities within the petroleum value chain.

“Greater confidence would be engendered with certainty in the petroleum industry, which will lead to increased investments.

“Nigeria will occupy its place among commits of nations who have updated their petroleum industry laws in line with current realities.

“The bill will also enable a structured monetization of fossil fuel resources before the whole world turns to renewables.

“It will also impact positively on the Nigerian economy with multiplier effect on the petroleum sector,’’ he said.

The minister also expressed the hope that the bill when passed, would lead to an increase in the use of gas for domestic purposes.

He said this would create a healthier society as well as provide job opportunities across the country.

Electricity Restored To Maiduguri After 2 Months Of Blackout

There was wild jubilation by some residents of Maiduguri town following the restoration of electricity on Wednesday evening after two months of total blackout.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two months blackout was caused by the destruction of some of the towers supplying electricity to the city from the national grid by insurgents along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road.

Some of the residents who spoke to NAN lauded the commitment shown by staff of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) and Borno Government in restoring the light.

“They deserve commendation, particularly the staff of TCN and soldiers providing them security during the work. They even encountered bomb attack while working to restore light.

“Our Governor, Babagana Zulum, also deserve special commendation for his contribution to ensure that we get light,” Ibrahim Abubakar of Gwange ward said.

Baba Kundiri, Sadisu Mohammed and Usman Gomari also expressed joy over the development and prayed it never happened again.

“We really suffered without light in view of the hot weather, and have been disturbed on how we are going to face the coming Ramadan period in hot season without light,” Kundiri said.

Orji Kalu: “I Am Thankful God Allowed Me Go To Prison”

The Chief Whip of the Senate, Sen. Orji Kalu, says he is grateful to God for allowing him to go to prison and come back.

Kalu stated this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia on Tuesday, adding that going to prison was a good experience for him.

Kalu was sentenced to Kuje Correctional Centre for 12 years on December 5, 2019 for allegedly misappropriating about N7.1 billion, while serving as Abia governor between 1999 and 2007.

However, the Supreme Court on May 8, 2020 upturned his trial and conviction by Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The apex court had said that Idris lacked the jurisdiction to try the matter, having been elevated to the Court of Appeal.

According to the statement by his Media Aide, Peter Eze, some prominent Abia politicians, who were vexed by Kalu’s scathing criticism against the state government, accused him of still suffering from his prison experience.

But speaking at a campaign rally for Chief Mascot Kalu, his younger brother and the All Progressives Congress candidate for the March 27 Aba North/South Federal Constituency poll, Kalu reportedly thanked God for his prison experience.

The statement quoted Kalu to have said that his detractors were “little-minded to think he is ashamed of his prison experience.

My conspirators thought I would be president in 2023, so they decided to cut my journey short at all cost.

“But you see, these people are not God. They think I am ashamed to have gone to prison.

I am not and I don’t blame them because they don’t know my relationship with God.

“Joseph went to prison, even former President Olusegun Obasanjo went to prison.

“My going to prison is part of my life script and I am thankful God allowed it.

“They are little minds and wicked people, who have refused to do any project for their own people .

Kalu recently criticized the state government for failing to address the huge infrastructure deficit in Abia.

He said the ongoing road repairs in Aba were funded by the Niger Delta Development Commission and Federal Government and not Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu’s administration.

He further criticised the administration for failing to regularly pay workers’ salaries as and when due.

However, the Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi, said the state government secured N27.4 billion World Bank facility to fund road projects in Aba.

Okiyi refuted the allegation that the projects were being executed by the federal government, saying that federal government does not build internal roads in states.
