FG Calls Meeting To Address Rising Food Prices

Abuja where the federal government has taken bold steps to address the rising cost of food prices across the country as it plans to convene a meeting of the National Food Security Council shortly.

It has also lined up concrete actions to ensure the growth of some sectors of the nation’s economy that have refused to grow in recent times.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, made this known to newsmen after the weekly virtual Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the State House.

The FEC also approved a total sum of eight point three billion naira to enable the Ministry of Police Affairs acquire some operational vehicles.

It is, however, not clear if the forthcoming general elections in the country, inspired FEC to make such approvals.

Okada Ban Begins Today, Lagos Deploys More Boats

The fresh ban imposed on operations of commercial motorcycles, popularly called Okada, in six Local Governments and nine local council development areas of Lagos State by the state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, takes effect from Wednesday (today).

Sanwo-Olu, had on May 18, 2022, announced the ban at a meeting with the state Commissioner of Police, Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers at the State House in Alausa.

Effective from June 1, 2022, the governor directed security operatives to enforce the proscription order across the councils: Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Surulere, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, and Apapa.

As the enforcement begins, the Lagos Ferry Services said it has deployed more boats and increased daily operational trips at terminals and jetties located within areas in the state where activities of commercial motorcyclists have been banned.

The Head, Public Affairs, LAGFERRY, Akeem Odusina, made this known in a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday.

The terminal and jetties, according to the statement, include the Badore terminal, Badore; Ipakodo terminal, Ikorodu; Five Cowries terminal, Ikoyi; CMS/Victoria Island terminal; Liverpool terminal, Apapa and Ilaje Bariga terminal, Bariga.

In the statement, Odusina noted that “travelling by water is 100 per cent traffic-free and there are first-mile and last-mile buses available at the terminal/jetty parks to take passengers to their final destination.”

Abducted Methodist Prelate, Samuel Kanu Uche Regains Freedom

The head of the Methodist Church in Nigeria, Samuel Kanu, has been freed after being abducted on Sunday, a church official confirmed to the BBC.

The police said he was travelling with two other priests on a highway in the south-eastern state of Abia when they were kidnapped.

It is unclear how they were freed, but separatist groups frequently carry out abductions in the region.

Soon after the news of the abduction came out, members of the Methodist Church in the country started hourly chain-prayers for the release of Dr Kanu and the other priests.

The Very Rev Nosakhare Nosayaba of Abuja's Methodist Cathedral of Unity had said Samuel Kanu, is a peace-loving Christian leader" whose abduction "came as a shock

Two Ekiti Men To Die By Hanging For Robbing 53-Year-Old Lecturer

An Ekiti State High Court, sitting in Ado Ekiti, has sentenced 36-year-old Fakorede Olawale and 39-year-old Tunji Olaitan to death for armed robbery.

The two men were tried on three counts bordering on attempted murder, attempted rape and armed robbery.

The charge read, “The defendants on November 24, 2015, at the Adehun area, beside Petim Sawmill, Iworoko Road, Ado Ekiti, within the jurisdiction of the court, did attempt to murder, attempt to rape and rob one Titilope Ayeni on the same day.

“The offences are contrary to sections 320 and 559 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. C16 Laws of Ekiti State, 2012, also Section 1(2) (a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap. R11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”

In her statement to the police, the victim, a 53-year-old lecturer, said, “I was about to sleep around 8pm when my generator suddenly stopped working. I went to check what happened to it; in the process, the defendants emerged from my compound.

“Before I said a word, they started cutting me with machetes. I shouted, as I defended my head and face. They dragged me inside my room and attempted to rape me, but they got distracted when my phone rang.

“Thereafter, they tried unsuccessfully to dump me inside my well. Following my shout, my neighbors called the police who came on time in a patrol van. One of the robbers, Fakorede Olawale, escaped with my N15,000 cash, my gold valued at $350, my phone, ATM cards and other valuables I cannot remember. He was later arrested.
