Sit-At-Home Enforcers Attack Anambra Communities, Leave Five Feared Dead

Communities in the Anambra Central Senatorial Zone were thrown into chaos on Monday morning as gunmen enforcing the outlawed sit-at-home order launched violent attacks, leaving at least five people feared dead.

The attacks, which occurred between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., targeted Abatete, Abagana, and Ukpo communities. According to sources, most of the casualties were members of the Anambra Vigilante Services.

The first attack reportedly took place in Abatete, where gunmen ambushed vigilante personnel attached to the town’s President-General (PG). Three security operatives were killed, while the PG sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Separate incidents unfolded in Abagana and Ukpo, with gunmen opening fire at the Ukpo roundabout in Dunukofia Local Government Area. A vigilante group member and a motorcycle rider were among the victims.

The attacks have left residents in the affected areas and surrounding communities, including the state capital, Awka, in a state of panic. A voice note circulating on social media warned residents in Awka to stay indoors due to the proximity of the violence.

"We are praying for the recovery of our PG. This senseless violence has left our community deeply shaken," said a member of the Abatete community.

Another resident of Ukpo shared on Facebook: "It was chaos. The attackers appeared suddenly, shooting indiscriminately and shouting, 'No Biafra, no freedom.' We are still trying to come to terms with what happened."

The police spokesperson in Anambra State, SP [Name], confirmed the incident, stating, "The details are still sketchy, but our operatives are currently on the ground. We will provide more information as soon as possible."

As investigations continue, the attacks have heightened fears among residents, underscoring the ongoing security challenges in the region.

Edo PDP Warns Okpebholo Against Taking Credit for Temboga Road, Other Projects

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized Governor Monday Okpebholo for allegedly taking credit for projects completed during the tenure of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.

In a statement issued by the publicity secretary of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, Chris Nehikhare, the party accused Okpebholo of falsely claiming to have initiated the 7.5 km Temboga Road project, among others, which had already been completed by the Obaseki administration.

Nehikhare described Okpebholo’s claims as misleading and urged the governor to focus on delivering his campaign promises rather than attempting to rewrite the achievements of the previous administration.

“It is regrettable that Governor Monday Okpebholo and his administration are starting off on the wrong note by deceiving the people of Edo State with false claims of initiating projects completed under the Obaseki-led government,” Nehikhare stated.

“One such project is the 7.5km Temboga Road, which was initiated and constructed by the Obaseki administration. This behavior is both preposterous and condemnable. We urge the governor to stop such acts immediately.”

The PDP further called on Okpebholo to concentrate on creating and executing his own developmental projects that align with his administration’s vision, if such a vision exists, rather than attempting to claim credit for past achievements.

“Edo people deserve genuine leadership, not deceit. We challenge Governor Okpebholo to focus on fulfilling his promises and delivering meaningful progress for the state instead of resorting to tactics that undermine the accomplishments of his predecessor,” Nehikhare concluded.

November 14, 2024 Governor Okpebholo Orders Immediate Freeze on Edo State Bank Accounts

Governor Okpebholo Orders Immediate Freeze on Edo State Bank Accounts

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State ordered an immediate freeze on all state-owned bank accounts on Thursday, effective until further notice. The directive mandates strict compliance from commercial banks and heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

The Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, disclosed the order in a statement, emphasizing that anyone, including MDA heads or civil servants, who disregards the directive will face severe consequences. "All bank accounts in commercial banks are frozen. Banks must comply with this order to ensure that not a single penny is withdrawn from government coffers until further notice," the statement reads.

The governor is conducting an investigation and reconciliation process and will decide on future actions for the accounts based on these findings.

Additionally, Itua announced that Governor Okpebholo has ordered the reversal of the "Ministry of Roads and Bridges" to its original name, "Ministry of Works." This change undoes a renaming initiated by the previous administration under Governor Godwin Obaseki. Governor Okpebholo noted the irony of the name given that no significant road or bridge projects were completed by Obaseki’s administration.

“We will continue reviewing the actions taken by the previous administration and make further decisions that serve the state’s best interests,” the statement concluded.

Gunmen Attack Army Checkpoint in Abia, Kill Two Soldiers

Gunmen attacked an army checkpoint early Wednesday morning at Ekenobizi, a border community between Abia and Imo states in Umuopara, Umuahia South Local Government Area, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers.

A military source, speaking anonymously, stated that the attack occurred around 6:18 am when the gunmen arrived in a white Lexus (350/400) model. The exact number of attackers, however, could not be confirmed.

In a statement on Wednesday, Lieutenant Colonel Jonah Unuakhalu of the Joint Task Force South East Operation UDO KA confirmed the incident, saying, “In the early hours of today, 13 November 2024, troops stationed at a checkpoint along the Umuahia-Owerri Road in Umuahia South came under attack by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).”

Unuakhalu added that despite the assault, the troops successfully repelled the attackers, forcing them to retreat in disarray, abandoning one Sienna and one Lexus Jeep used in the attack. Unfortunately, two soldiers lost their lives in the firefight.

The Joint Task Force appealed to residents, particularly those in Abia State, for any credible information to assist in tracking down the attackers and combating criminal elements in the region. The force reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property in line with global best practices and the rules of engagement.
