10 Feared Dead In Lagos Building Collapse As Designer Warned Of Looming Tragedy

No fewer than 10 persons are feared dead after a 21-storey building collapsed on Monday on Gerard Road in the eye-brow Ikoyi area of Lagos State.

As at the time of this report, many people are still trapped in the rubble.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), one body was also recovered from the rubbles.

The rescue was before the arrival of emergency responders of NEMA, LASEMA, and officials from the Lagos State Building Control Agency.

The deputy governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, visited the scene.

Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu said the important thing is to rescue as many people as possible.

The company that designed the structure and supervised the construction, Prowess Engineering Limited, said it withdrew from the project in 2020 because it no longer shared the same vision with the owners, Fourscore Heights Limited.

The Managing Director of the company, Muritala Olawale, in a letter to Osibona on February 20, 2020, said his firm could not guarantee the integrity of the building from anything above the fifteen floor approved by government.

The owner of the collapsed building has been arrested by government.

Bandits Invade Nasarawa Federal Varsity, Kidnap 2 Students, Demand N25m

Unknown gunmen have abducted two students of the Federal University, Lafia in Nasarawa State.

The abductors were said to have invaded the school premises over the weekend.

They were said to have shot sporadically into the air while they whisked away the students without any intervention from security operatives in the area.

A source within the university said that the kidnappers have reached out to the parents of the abducted students and demanded N25 million ransom.

“It is indeed a sad situation that students will be kidnapped without any help from security operatives in the area.

“I heard that the kidnappers are demanding N25 million from the parents. The incident clearly shows that we are not safe in this environment. We are praying for their safe return,” the source said.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ramhan Nansel, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said the command’s anti-kidnapping unit has been dispatched to commence a thorough search for the victims.

“The students were kidnapped Saturday evening in Mararaba but we did not get any report of the incident until Sunday afternoon.

“But I assure you that we will do our best to rescue them from the kidnappers as men of our anti-kidnapping unit have been mobilised to conduct a thorough search in bushes and mountains in the area,” he said.

Road Crashes Kill 62, Injure 624 In Adamawa

The Federal Road Safety Corps, Adamawa Sector Command, has said no fewer than 62 persons were killed and 624 injured in road accidents that occurred between January and September 2021 in the state.
Sector Commander, Utte Boyi, disclosed this today in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Yola.
He said during this period, 1,025 people and 369 vehicles were involved in 202 road crashes caused mostly by speeding and wrong overtaking by drivers.

He urged road users to obey road traffic regulations and avoid night travels to cut down the rate of accidents, especially during the last three months of the year.

"We have entered the ember months and it is the rush period because a lot of people will be travelling.
"So motorists should not be in a hurry to pick passengers and make a lot of money.
"You should always drive with care, maintaining the speed limit.
"In fact, you should install the speed limit device in your vehicles to help you control the speed of your vehicle,'' added the FRSC official.
