Fans Vandalise Stadium As Nigeria Miss Out On World Cup Qualification

Following the final whistle, a crowd of irate fans stormed the pitch and damaged some of the stadium facilities.

Fans unleashed mayhem in the recently refurbished Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja and vandalised facilities in protest of the Super Eagle's failure to qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The Black Stars of Ghana ended Nigeria’s dream of becoming the first African country to qualify for four consecutive World Cups.

The Ghanaians secured a 1-1 draw in Abuja on Tuesday, March 28, 2022, to progress to the World Cup based on the away goals rule — after holding Nigeria to a goalless draw in Kumasi last Friday, March 25, 2022.

Thomas Partey scored against Nigeria in the 11th minute. The Eagles' equaliser through William Troost-Ekong in the 22nd minute was not enough to salvage the tie.

However, following the final whistle, a crowd of irate fans stormed the pitch and damaged some of the stadium facilities.

In a now-viral video, the fans poured into the pitch from all sides, upturning the dugout while smashing its glasses in anger.

The vandalising crowd also carried out the act despite attempts by security operatives to stop them with teargas.

Meanwhile, some Nigerians on Twitter have described the act as a “show of shame” while condemning the vandalisation.

Air Peace Suspends Flights To Kaduna Airport

Air Peace, Nigeria’s largest flight carrier, has suspended operations to Kaduna International Airport.

The military says it has killed twelve terrorists involved in Saturday’s attack on the Kaduna Airport.

It also said the attack took place six kilometers away from the terminal point and outside the airport perimeter fence.

An airport staff was killed during the attack.

Speaking during an on-the-spot assessment of the airport, the Garrison Commander of One Mechanized Division of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General URIAH OPUENE and the Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, SAMUEL ARUWAN, said the bandits were killed through an air strike by troops of the Nigerian Air force.

They said the bandits do not have the capacity to attack the airport due to heavy security presence in the airport general area.

They added that ground troops have successfully taken the battle to the enclave of the bandits inside the forest and declared the Kaduna International Airport as safe for passengers and staff.

However, the airline affected in Saturday’s attack has suspended its operations to the airport, saying it wants to re-evaluate security at the Kaduna airport.

On Tuesday, Azman announced an indefinite suspension of its flights to Kaduna over insecurity.

Hours later, the news of Air Peace halting operations to Kaduna broke.

Air Peace Spokesman, Stanley Olisa confirmed the development to our correspondent, but did not go into details.
