Rivers LG Election Will Proceed, You’ll Have to Shoot Me First – Fubara Challenges IGP

Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara asserted on Friday that the state’s local government elections must proceed as scheduled, despite opposition from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun. Fubara boldly stated that the IGP would not stop him from accessing the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) premises.

Speaking in Port Harcourt, Fubara declared, “The IGP would have to shoot me to prevent my entry into RSIEC. When it comes to Rivers State, you call yourself the IGP, but enough is enough. I will stand my ground. This is my state, and these are my people. Elections must hold.

Fubara expressed frustration, adding, “You have no authority to stop me. Try it, and part of your legacy as a wicked IGP will include shooting Fubara. I’ve shown enough respect, but to all Rivers indigenes, know that the elections will take place, no matter what happens.

The Rivers State Police Command had earlier stated that they would not provide security for the local government elections slated for Saturday, following a court ruling. In a statement issued by police spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Command confirmed receiving a restraining order preventing them from participating in the elections, referencing a September 30, 2024, judgment from an Abuja Federal High Court. The Force Legal Department advised that the court's ruling should be upheld.

Protest Breaks Out at PDP Secretariat Over Rivers Local Government Election

Protests broke out at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday, as tensions escalated ahead of the October 5, 2024, local government election. A large crowd of protesters gathered at the party’s secretariat, prompting security personnel to intervene and manage the situation, including controlling traffic disruptions in the area.

The protests stemmed from mounting concerns over the delay in the release of the 2023 Voters' Register by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC). This delay followed a ruling by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja on September 30, 2024, which barred INEC from releasing the voters' register due to ongoing legal disputes.

Despite the court’s ruling, Governor Siminalayi Fubara insisted that the election would proceed as planned. He expressed confidence in a prior Supreme Court ruling that requires all states to have democratically elected local government officials, reinforcing his stance to move forward with the election.

Ighodalo’s Supporters Rally at Edo INEC Office, Claim PDP Won in Election

On Wednesday, a group of Edo State residents gathered at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Benin City, demanding the restoration of what they claim is the rightful victory of their preferred candidate, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The protesters, carrying placards with messages like "Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the governor-elect we know" and "Edo PDP won the election, but INEC and police colluded to change it," voiced their dissatisfaction with the recent election results in the state.

Chanting solidarity songs, the crowd, which included supporters from various local government areas, accused INEC of mismanaging the election results. They called for immediate action to address what they described as electoral injustice.

On September 22, the All-Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, was declared the winner of the governorship election, defeating his main rivals, Ighodalo and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party. However, the PDP rejected the outcome, claiming that INEC violated the Electoral Act and insisting that Ighodalo had actually won the election.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, stated that the party’s polling agents had evidence of Ighodalo's lead. The party further backed Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, who chaired the Edo PDP National Campaign Council and echoed the claim that Ighodalo had a clear lead before the results were allegedly manipulated.

The PDP declared, “The People's Democratic Party stands by the results of the Edo State Governorship election as recorded by its polling agents across the state. The rush and aggression with which the APC attacked Governor Fintiri only further exposes their desperation to cover up their manipulation and steal the mandate freely given to Dr. Asue Ighodalo by the people of Edo State, as reflected in the genuine votes cast at the polling units.”

The PDP has called for an investigation into what they allege was blatant alteration and substitution of genuine results by the APC in collaboration with certain INEC officials and security personnel.

Abia Representative Nkwonta Leaves PDP to Join APC

Chris Nkwonta, an Abia lawmaker in the House of Representatives, has officially left the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All-Progressives Congress (APC). He announced his defection on Wednesday through a letter that Speaker Abbas Tajudeen read aloud during a session.

Nkwonta represents the Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency in Abia State. However, the Deputy Minority Leader, Aliyu Madaki, raised objections to the defection, referencing Order 68 of the 1999 Constitution, which states that a lawmaker can only leave the party that sponsored their election in the event of a crisis within that party.

The Speaker ruled Madaki's point of order out of order, asserting that there is indeed a crisis within the PDP. "The information available to me shows there is a faction," he stated, prompting cheers from the APC members in attendance.
