TCN Restores Power Supply to Several Northern States

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has successfully restored bulk power supply through its 330kV Ugwuaji-Apir transmission line 1 as of 4:56 pm on Wednesday, following repairs on a vandalized section. This update was shared in a statement by TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah.

With the restoration of this line, the Apir-Lafia 330kV transmission line 2 is now fully operational, enabling power supply to Lafia, Makurdi, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, and Gombe States. TCN's engineering team is also set to begin work on restoring the second 330kV transmission line, with all required materials ready. Work on this line will start as soon as the site is secured for personnel safety.

In the meantime, teams of linesmen will re-inspect the 330kV line 2 to ensure no additional sections are impacted as repairs continue. "We appreciate your patience and understanding as our engineers work diligently on the 330kV transmission line 2. TCN is committed to quickly restoring this line to enhance power supply to the affected regions," the statement added.

The northern region has faced power outages for over a week, initially caused by the tripping of the 330 kV transmission line between Benue and Enugu. The Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line was also impacted, affecting power in Kano, Gombe, Kebbi, Jos, Kaduna, Benue, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Kwara, Nasarawa, and Yobe States.

NCAA Clarifies Airworthiness of Crashed Port Harcourt Helicopter

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has clarified that the helicopter with registration 5N-BQG, which crashed in Port Harcourt last week, was indeed airworthy, contrary to claims in recent reports.

In a statement, NCAA Director General Chris Najomo refuted an online report suggesting that the helicopter, which was operated by East Wind Aviation for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), had been scrapped in 2018. Najomo emphasized that the aircraft met all airworthiness requirements at the time of the crash.

The incident occurred on Thursday when the helicopter, en route from Port Harcourt Military Base (DNPM) to the FPSO-NUIMS ANTAN oil rig, crashed into waterways near the Rivers State capital at 11:22 a.m. Tragically, four bodies have been recovered from the eight passengers on board.

Addressing claims made by an online platform, Najomo confirmed that while the helicopter was first registered in 2004 under Aero Contractors as 5N-BGN and later deregistered to Canada in 2009, it was not scrapped in 2018. “The report falsely implied that the helicopter’s registration was canceled in 2018 after being scrapped and raised questions about its re-registration as 5N-BQG,” Najomo clarified.

NCAA continues its investigation to uncover the precise details surrounding the incident, maintaining that the helicopter’s airworthiness was in good standing prior to the crash.

Protests Breaks Out at INEC Demanding Redeployment of Ondo REC

Dozens of protesters from Ondo State gathered at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, demanding the immediate redeployment of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ondo, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola. Demonstrators carried signs with slogans such as “Mahmood: Redeploy Babalola Now” and “We Don’t Want a Repeat of Edo Fiasco,” blocking the entrance to INEC’s national office and requesting a meeting with INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, to express their concerns.

The protest follows a recent appeal by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who questioned Babalola’s neutrality, alleging her connections to the All-Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking at a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) rally in Akure, Governor Makinde argued that Babalola’s long-standing ties within Ondo might affect her impartiality in the upcoming elections.

Echoing the governor’s concerns, protest leader Ayo Adeyemi, convener of the Ondo Youth League, clarified that their issue was not personal but focused on ensuring an unbiased electoral process. “We have no issue with Babalola’s credentials, but her familiarity with the state could present a conflict of interest,” he stated. “For a fair and credible election in Ondo, we simply request her redeployment.”
The demonstrators emphasized that their actions were not a critique of INEC but a call for impartial oversight in the forthcoming election.

In response, INEC National Commissioner Major General Modibbo Alkali (retd) praised the group for their peaceful protest and assured them that their concerns would be considered. “INEC operates with complete neutrality and is committed to upholding the Constitution,” he said. “We have received your letter, and the chairman will thoroughly review it. Rest assured; INEC will address your concerns.”
