Suspected Herders Kill Seven in Fresh Attack in Benue

At least seven people were killed and three others abducted in a violent attack by suspected armed herders on Agbo Vengav Udam community in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State. The assailants stormed the village around 7 p.m. on Thursday, firing indiscriminately and leaving a trail of devastation.

A resident, speaking anonymously, recounted that the attackers entered the community via a border village in Otukpo LGA. “They came through Otukpo’s border village into31 and shot sporadically, killing seven people instantly. They also abducted three others,” the source said. Among the victims was an infant, whose mother was among those kidnapped.

The resident added that five of the bodies were taken to a morgue in Naka, while the families of the other two chose immediate burial. Fearing further attacks, many residents have fled the community.

Gwer West LGA Chairman Victor Ormin confirmed the attack on Friday, expressing frustration over the recurring violence. “Scores were killed in Vengav Udam village on Thursday night,” he said, noting that two critically injured survivors are receiving treatment at a hospital in Naka. Ormin decried the relentless havoc caused by suspected herders, especially following a recent incident where gunmen hijacked two commercial vehicles near Naka and abducted 14 passengers.

Efforts to reach the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, for comment were unsuccessful.

Taekwondo Champion Dies in Kwara Rainstorm Tragedy

A devastating 30-minute rainstorm struck Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, on Monday, claiming the life of Musa Ismail, a celebrated Ilorin-born Taekwondo coach and champion. The tragic incident occurred at the Lower Niger River Basin Authority’s Badminton court, which was completely destroyed by the storm.

Eyewitnesses reported that a portion of the recently renovated Badminton court, built under the previous administration, collapsed during the storm, fatally striking Ismail. Described by trainees as a promising and friendly coach, Ismail had recently won the 2025 MKA Taekwondo Championship in Ede, Osun State. He leaves behind a wife of over a year and a young child.

Sources confirmed that Ismail was training and playing with friends at the facility just before the collapse. By Tuesday, the damaged court had been sealed off, with the collapsed section visible from outside. Agency employees were reluctant to comment on the incident, and attempts to contact the agency’s leadership were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.

An anonymous staff member described the event as a tragic accident that occurred during Monday’s rain, clarifying that Ismail was not an employee of the agency. “This is a heartbreaking incident, but only the managing director can speak on it, and he’s unavailable today. He’ll be in the office tomorrow if you wish to follow up,” the employee noted.

April 23, 2025 NSA Ribadu Pledges Federal Support During Benue Visit Amid Rising Killings

NSA Ribadu Pledges Federal Support During Benue Visit Amid Rising Killings

On Tuesday, National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu visited Benue State to express solidarity with the government and residents following a surge in violence that has claimed over 70 lives. Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, Ribadu assured Governor Hyacinth Alia and the people of Benue of the federal government’s unwavering support during this crisis.

The visit, mandated by President Bola Tinubu, was prompted by the devastating “Black Friday” massacre in Katsina-Ala, Ukum, and Logo Local Government Areas. “This is a tragic act of evil, but good people must come together to defeat it. We will tackle this as a united front. Benue is not alone,” Ribadu declared.

Reaffirming Benue’s importance to Nigeria, Ribadu emphasized that the state would not face this security challenge in isolation. “The entire nation stands with you. We share your pain and will confront this together,” he said.

Ribadu acknowledged that the current administration inherited a deeply compromised security framework but highlighted progress under President Tinubu’s leadership. “We took over a dire situation, but violent incidents have significantly decreased since we assumed office. This is a work in progress, and we are fully committed to addressing it,” he stated.

Calling for unity, Ribadu urged stakeholders to refrain from politicizing the violence. “Let’s work together and avoid turning these tragedies into political tools. While we can’t station security forces in every village, our armed forces are doing their utmost,” he said.

The NSA contextualized Nigeria’s insecurity, noting that the crisis began in 2011 and is not unique to the current administration. “This is not about politics, religion, or ethnicity—it’s criminality. Countries like Sudan, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso face similar or worse challenges,” he explained, drawing on his experience in Afghanistan to underscore the global nature of such threats.

Ribadu praised the Tinubu administration’s proactive and responsive approach to insecurity. “We are addressing root causes and making tangible progress. Our strategy is different, and we will keep improving,” he concluded.

Benue Attack Death Toll Rises to 20, Says Gov. Alia

The death toll from suspected herdsmen attacks in Ukum and Logo local government areas of Benue State has risen to 20, as security forces and locals continue searching for survivors. Governor Hyacinth Alia, in a phone conversation, provided updated casualty figures, noting that five bodies were initially recovered in Gbagir and taken to a morgue. Civilians later found two additional bodies, and a family in Gbagir, granted security cover, buried a relative promptly. In Logo, police recovered 12 bodies during simultaneous attacks, bringing the total to 20 deaths in the coordinated assault in Sankera.

The state government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging residents to share information with security agencies to combat insecurity swiftly. The attacks follow a Friday statement by Benue State Police Public Relations Officer Sewuese Anene, who reported that suspected militia invaded the Sankera axis. Police, led by Commissioner Steve H. Yabanet, engaged the attackers in Gbagir, where five people were killed. A concurrent attack in Logo claimed 12 lives, totaling 17 deaths by Friday, before the figure rose to 20.

Social media rumors claiming up to 100 deaths have prompted police warnings against spreading unverified reports. Anene detailed the police response, stating, “Upon reports of a militia invasion in Sankera, tactical teams were deployed to repel the attackers. The bandits shot farmers sporadically, killing five in Gbagir and 12 in Logo before police intervention. Security forces are still pursuing the retreating bandits toward the Taraba forest.” The police urged the public to avoid inciting panic and pledged ongoing operations with community cooperation.

The violence follows earlier attacks in Otukpo Local Government Area, where Emichi, Odudaje, and Okpamaju communities lost five lives in February, a day after 11 people were killed in Otobi. Speaking to journalists after Good Friday Mass at Holy Ghost Parish in Makurdi, Governor Alia condemned the attacks, warning against vigilante justice. He assured residents that the state, in partnership with the National Security Adviser’s office, is crafting a strategic plan to halt the killings and called for vigilance and timely reporting to security agencies.
