13 Year-Old Wins 2023 Rivers Spelling Bee Competition

Excellent Edwin-Isotu, a talented 13-year-old student from Graduate High School in Port Harcourt, has emerged as the winner of the 2023 Junior Category in the Rivers State Spelling Bee Competition.

As a result of his impressive victory, Edwin-Isotu will represent the state in the upcoming national competition, scheduled to take place in Rivers State from July 26 to July 29.

Abdulsalam Ibrahim, the national coordinator of the Nigeria Spelling Bee Competition, highlighted the significance of the event in promoting literacy among Nigerian students and providing them with remarkable opportunities for growth.

He expressed concern over the growing trend of using slang and abbreviations in written communication, attributing it to the influence of social media. Ibrahim emphasized the importance of mastering the English language, particularly for students and young people who play a crucial role in shaping the future of the nation.

The Nigeria Spelling Bee Competition aims to showcase the country's top wordsmiths and readers on international platforms. Participants are required to study words from the dictionary rather than being given a predetermined list. Additionally, at the national level, spellers are expected to write essays, further enhancing their language skills.

Ibrahim emphasized that the competition serves as a platform to improve spelling and comprehension, and a study guide has been prepared to assist participants in mastering spelling rules.

The competition also helps participants develop effective communication and public speaking skills, as well as boost their self-esteem.

Evans Kingsley, Edwin-Isotu's tutor, expressed confidence in his student's abilities and expressed optimism that he would bring glory to Rivers State in the national finals and beyond.

The regional stage of the competition witnessed the participation of over 700 students from secondary, primary, and institutional platforms across Rivers State. The winners of the national finals will have the opportunity to win exciting prizes, including a ₦1 million scholarship.

Furthermore, the national champions will be awarded an all-expenses-paid trip to represent Nigeria at the African Spelling Bee Competition in Ethiopia in November.

Edwin-Isotu's outstanding achievement is a testament to his dedication and talent, and he is poised to make Rivers State proud in the upcoming national competition.

Impact of May Rainfall: 228 Lagos Buildings and 336 Families Affected

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has conducted an assessment of rainfall in Lagos between May 1 and May 15, revealing the impact on buildings and families in the area.

According to NEMA's Territorial Coordinator in Lagos, Ibrahim Farinloye, a total of 228 buildings and 336 families were affected during this period.

The incidents were primarily caused by wind and rainstorms, which resulted in damages to both public and private structures. On May 1, areas such as Agboyi one, Agboyi two, Agboyi three, and Odo Ogun communities in Kosofe Local Government Area recorded significant damages.

Approximately 130 houses were either partially or fully affected, involving 228 families.

Another incident on May 15 impacted 98 buildings in Agege, Ifako Ijaye, Ikola, Isale Aboru, and Oke Ishagun, located in Alimosho Local Government Area. Around 108 families were affected in this case, and there was also damage to 13 electric poles in the affected areas.

In light of these events, Farinloye emphasized the importance of exercising caution during rainfall, especially during working hours. He advised against allowing children to play outside or run errands shortly before rainfall.

Schools were urged to take precautions and train students to seek shelter under furniture to protect themselves from falling objects. Additionally, seeking refuge under temporary structures and trees should be avoided.

It's worth noting that on May 14, heavy winds accompanying rainfall caused damage to the roofs of several buildings in Ijegun, Ikotun-Igando LCDA.

NEMA's assessment serves as a reminder of the potential risks and the need for preparedness during rainfall in order to minimize damages and ensure the safety of residents in Lagos.

Comedian Julius Agwu Thinks There’s More To The Beef Between AY And Basketmouth

Julius Agwu, a popular Nigerian comedian, has weighed in on the ongoing feud between two of his colleagues, AY and Basketmouth.

The two comedians, who are well-known in the Nigerian entertainment industry, have been at odds for over a year now, allegedly due to a disagreement over a ₦30,000 gig, as revealed by AY during an interview with Chude Jideonwo.

During a recent interview with Naija FM, Agwu offered his perspective on the matter and suggested that there could be underlying factors at play beyond just the monetary dispute.

He said, ''I don't think it's just the N30, 000. Maybe there is more. Na we dey back stage. We nor go fit know. Maybe there is something else that is making them angry and they have both carried in their minds that is causing dem quarrel.''

He recounted his own experience with AY, recalling how he had called AY to request a rescheduling of his yearly Easter Sunday comedy show because it coincided with his own event on the same day. However, according to Julius Agwu, AY refused and hung up on him.

''Laugh for Christ sake was every Easter Sunday before AY began to do promo saying he was doing one show. I called AY telling him that day is my day, he cut the call on my neck," he added.

The beef between AY and Basketmouth has been characterised by conflicting claims and accusations, with AY alleging that Basketmouth owed him money and Basketmouth denying any friendship with AY and calling some of AY's claims lies.

Julius Agwu's comments shed further light on the situation and suggest that there may be deeper issues at play beyond just the ₦30,000 incident.
