91-Year-Old Kenyan Man Returns Home with Only a Walking Stick after 50 Years in Pursuit of a Better Life

Samuel Machuka, now 91, has reappeared in Masabo village, Nyaribari Masaba Kisii, five days ago, after vanishing from his home half a century ago.

The man, who had been working as a casual laborer on a farm in Wote, Makueni county, was traced through the efforts of the Provincial Administration.

Machuka left his home in the 1970s in search of better opportunities. He returned during heavy rain to the embrace of his family, although only a few of his age mates could recognize him.

Robert Makomba, Machuka's nephew, had previously worked with him in Mau Narok in 1995. Their paths diverged, and now this unexpected homecoming brings joy and astonishment to the community, as the 91-year-old man returns with just a walking stick by his side.

"I lost my father and came back for his burial. I never went back to Mau Narok, and since then, we lost touch because we had no form of communication then. Recently we got information that he had been traced to Makueni county,” he said.

"We appreciate the Provincial Administration. As Christians under the Seventh Day Adventist Church, we will not hold any ritual, but we will only welcome him back to our home and allow him to settle,” Makomba added.

His grandson, Enock Abuga, who picked him up from Makueni said he was not willing to return home. “For several hours, I tried to convince him that he should return home,” he said.

Machuka said he will return to Makueni to pick up his belongings.

"I was not given the opportunity to pack my belongings, I travelled here to allow my people to confirm that indeed I am still alive,” he said.

Machuka had three informal marriages but there is no information on the whereabouts of the three women.

"Yes, I have been married before, but I can’t be able to trace any of those women. My employer back in Makueni took good care of me. I plan to go back to thank her. I became the son of the soil, and they even gave me a piece of land where I grew vegetables,” he said.

"I have traversed several parts of the country in search of greener pastures. I have been in Makueni since the Nyayo era. I voted for all the last three Presidents and the current one while in Makueni. I have worked as a casual labourer in nearly all sub counties in the county. I finally enrolled for the elderly money while in the county,” he added.

His octogenarian uncles said they had been looking for Machuka in vain but they had hope that he would return home.

"We have his portion of family land where he would be allowed to put a house. We will support him to settle. If there is a woman who has children she will be welcomed back home,” the uncles said.

Makomba said his uncle is a brilliant man. “He has kept all the receipts from the bank in the Older Persons Cash Transfer Program. The integration process has been smooth. Tomorrow we are doing land demarcation and we have welcomed the area Assistant Chief to make the process formal.”

He recounted that they worked for a white settler identified only as Bruce in Mau Narok.

Makomba said Machuka and his first wife were blessed with three sons.

"He named his first born son, Bruce Machuka after the death of his then employer Bruce. He was later blessed with a second born and named him Richard Machuka,” he said.

He revealed that one is a driver along the Nairobi-Kitengela route while the third son could be operating a business in Mau Narok.

Machuka’s second and third sons are said to have been blessed with two and three children respectively. His daughters-in law hail from Gusii and Central.

He has in the last three days been visiting nearby shopping centres to familiarise himself and check on the developments that have taken place since he left.

"I am happy to be back home; this place looks wonderful. I will put up a home. I hope my children join me in putting up a home. I am now retired and thank God for the days he has given me on earth,” he said.

Family Honors British Billionaire Who Passed Away in Titan Submersible Incident

The family of Hamish Harding, a British billionaire adventurer who tragically lost his life in a catastrophic implosion of the Titan submersible, has expressed their heartfelt tribute to their beloved father.

Describing him as a dedicated figure, they acknowledged him as a guide, inspiration, support, and a living legend.

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed the discovery of the submersible's tail cone near the Titanic wreckage, while additional debris consistent with a significant pressure chamber failure was found in the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Newfoundland.

Alongside Harding, OceanGate Expeditions' pilot and CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood, his son Suleman Dawood, and French national Paul-Henri Nargeolet were also sadly lost in the incident.

In a short statement, Harding’s family said, “He was one of a kind and we adored him.

“He was a passionate explorer – whatever the terrain – who lived his life for his family, his business and for the next adventure.

“What he achieved in his lifetime was truly remarkable and if we can take any small consolation from this tragedy, it’s that we lost him doing what he loved.”

Harding’s family said his death has left a “gap in our lives that can never be filled”, and that they were “united in grief” with the families of the others who had died.

“We know that Hamish would have been immensely proud to see how nations, experts, industry colleagues and friends came together for the search and we extend our heartfelt thanks for all their efforts,” they said.

Shahzada Dawood’s company paid tribute to him and his son after their deaths.

In a statement, Engro Corporation, the Pakistani conglomerate that Dawood was vice chairman of, said: “With heavy hearts and great sadness, we grieve the loss of our vice chairman, Shahzada Dawood, and his beloved son, Suleman Dawood.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Dawood family at this tragic time.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, friends and all those around the world who grieve this unthinkable loss.”

Rear Admiral Mauger said there did not appear to be any connection between the underwater noises detected during the search and rescue mission and the location of the debris on the seafloor.

“This was a catastrophic implosion of the vessel which would have generated a significant broadband sound down there that the sonar buoys would have picked up,” he said.

Undersea expert Paul Hankin said five major pieces of debris helped to identify it as from the Titan submersible – including the vessel’s nose cone and the front end bell of the pressure hull.

According to court documents, safety concerns had previously been raised about the Titan submersible by a former employee of OceanGate.

The filings said David Lochridge, OceanGate’s former director of marine operations, claimed wrongful dismissal after flagging worries about the company’s alleged “refusal to conduct critical, non-destructive testing of the experimental design”.

Court papers suggest Lochridge “identified numerous issues that posed serious safety concerns” but he was allegedly “met with hostility and denial of access” to necessary documents before later being fired.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly described the update as “tragic news” and said the UK Government is closely supporting the British families affected.

The White House said the families of those who died had “been through a harrowing ordeal over the past few days, and we are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers.”

Japan Raises Age Of Consent From 13 To 16 Years

Lawmakers in Japan unanimously passed key reforms to sex crime legislation, raising the age of consent from 13 to 16 years old.

The reforms also address rape prosecution requirements and criminalize voyeurism. The Tokyo-based group Human Rights Now applauded the reforms as a significant step forward in combating sexual violence against children.

Previously, Japan's age of consent had remained unchanged since 1907, with children aged 13 and above considered capable of giving consent. However, regional ordinances banning inappropriate acts with minors effectively raised the age of consent to 18 in certain parts of the country.

The new law includes exemptions for teen couples with an age difference of no more than five years, provided both partners are over 13. These reforms follow previous revisions to Japan's criminal code on sexual offenses in 2017 and nationwide rallies in 2019, sparked by a series of acquittals in rape cases.

The latest reforms also criminalize voyeurism and impose penalties for secretly filming private body parts or indecent acts without justification.

While some residents welcomed the reforms, others expressed skepticism about their effectiveness in curbing voyeurism.
