FG Reopens Third Mainland Bridge After Repairs

The Federal Controller of Works in the state, Olukorede Kesha, has expressed satisfaction with repairs done on the Third Mainland Bridge, pending a comprehensive rehabilitation in January 2024.

Kesha gave the assurance during an on-the-spot assessment of the repairs on the bridge.

On Thursday, the controller announced a 24-hour closure of the bridge to allow for repairs of some critical portions from midnight on Saturday till midnight on Sunday.

During the inspection, the controller stopped on various portions between Iyana-Oworo and Adeniji-Adele, where remedial repairs had been done on a 9.7-kilometre stretch of the Lagos Island inbound lane.

She stated that the construction was just palliative work to keep the highway in good condition, pending the comprehensive rehabilitation scheduled for January 2024.

Kesha said that some components needed for the comprehensive rehabilitation work were being imported for the emergency repairs.

Kogi Governor Bello Says No Assassination Attempt But Disagreement By Security Forces

Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has clarified the incident earlier reported by the state as an assassination attempt on him, saying it was a minor disagreement between his security detail and military personnel securing the highway.

Speaking in Abuja on Sunday, Governor Bello clarified that while there was a minor altercation between men of the Nigerian Police Force attached to his convoy and those of a military unit manning the highways, it was in the course of both units performing their lawful security duties.

This comes a few hours after a statement released by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, described the attacks as one that took place at three different points “with the last barricade being around Kwali Federal Capital Territory at about 4.20 pm”.

“The attackers, dressed in military uniforms, waylaid the Governor’s convoy and started shooting sporadically at his vehicle and other vehicles.

“It took the swift intervention of the security personnel attached to the Governor to foil the satanic plans of the unknown soldiers.”

But Bello, while commending the security agencies for their joint contributions to the improved security of lives and property enjoyed by the citizens of Kogi State, called on the high command of the agencies involved to investigate overzealousness or unprofessional conduct by any of their men involved in the incident and apply the necessary sanctions.

The Governor called on state citizens to ignore any attempt by political profiteers to use the incident to unsettle the polity as the state’s 2023 governorship election slated for November 11 draws nearer.

This follows Fanwo’s earlier assertions; “We are not oblivious that certain elements are bent on painting Kogi unsafe ahead of the Governorship Poll slated for November 11, 2023.

“As an administration, we will spare nothing to ensure our citizens are not subjected to security threats by desperate politicians sponsoring violence and terrorism.”

However, Governor Bello assured citizens of the state of his safety and the adequacy of security arrangements to ensure that the elections will be peaceful, free and fair.

Appeal Court Nullifies Victory Of Senate Minority Leader, Orders Rerun

The Court of Appeal, Abuja, has nullified the victory of the Senate Minority Leader, Simon Mwadkwon, representing Plateau North- Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

In a unanimous judgment, the three-member panel led by Justice Daudu Williams held that the PDP did not validly nominate Mwadkwon.

The panel held that it is their view that court orders were not fully complied with by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as 12 Local Government Areas did not participate in the congress.

The court also ordered a rerun for the Plateau North Senatorial seat to be conducted in 90 days.

The court cited non-compliance with a subsisting court order from the Plateau State High Court made in 2020 for the PDP to conduct Congress before nominations as a key factor in their decision.

The panel at the Appellate court led by Justice Okon Abang also nullified the victory of PDP’s Musa Avia representing Bassa North in the House of Representatives.

October 23, 2023 Supreme Court To Hear Atiku’s Appeal Against President Tinubu’s Victory

Supreme Court To Hear Atiku’s Appeal Against President Tinubu’s Victory

The Supreme Court is set to commence hearings on the appeal by the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku, who came in second in the election, had approached the presidential election tribunal to nullify the February 25 election, in which the Independent National Electoral Commission declared Bola Tinubu the winner.

Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, and the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, had also filed separate appeals at the apex court seeking to nullify the election of President Tinubu.

The tribunal, however, dismissed the petitions for lack of merit.

Dissatisfied with the lower court’s verdict, they filed appeals before the Supreme Court.

Apart from faulting the verdict of the Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC, which affirmed Tinubu’s election, Atiku also filed for permission to tender a copy of Tinubu’s academic records released by the Chicago State University, USA, which he said showed that he submitted a forged CSU certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

In a notice, the Supreme Court Registrar, Zainab Garba, announced that Atiku’s appeal had been listed for hearing today.

Meanwhile, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Tinubu, Bayo Onanugta, has accused followers of Atiku and Obi of allegedly trying “to stampede the Washington, D.C., court to change its earlier order on the FBI to release documents on President Tinubu’s forfeiture case of 1993.”
