Explosion Rocks Rivers State House Of Assembly; Security Operatives Take Over Complex

Rivers, where there has been an explosion at the state House of Assembly complex, which destroyed some properties in the chamber.

It was gathered that the complex located on Moscow Road was engulfed by fire after a loud bang was heard at about 8 o’clock last night.

Police operatives from the Rivers State Police Headquarters, close to the complex, were said to have rushed in to extinguish the fire. However, a section of the assembly complex had been affected before the intervention.

Heavy security, comprising 17 patrol vans and an armored personnel carrier, was reportedly used to cordon off the area.

Though the police had yet to confirm the incident, a senior police officer said the intervention by police operatives prevented the fire from spreading.

This is coming amid rumours of alleged moves by some lawmakers to impeach the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Ogun State Police Arrest Two Pupils For Setting School On Fire

The Ogun State Police Command announced on Sunday that it had apprehended two minors in connection with a destructive incident at a school in the Isheri-Olofin area of Ifo Local Government Area.

According to the command's spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the children, aged six and nine, both residing in the Isheri Olofin community, were responsible for setting fire to their school and damaging school property on October 29, 2023.

The incident came to light when a community leader reported the matter to the police. As per the report, the youngsters gained access to an unlocked classroom at Community Primary School Isheri Olofin, where they collected books left behind by teachers and fellow students and set them ablaze. The extent of the damage to the books is presently unknown.

Upon receiving the report, the Anti-Crime and Detectives Unit promptly visited the scene and brought the young suspects to the police station for questioning. Odutola also mentioned that the parents of the minors would be summoned for questioning to ascertain the circumstances that led to their children's actions.

She emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "This is a very serious crime for these children to get themselves involved with." The police are actively working to locate the parents and will keep the public updated if any other individuals may have played a role in influencing the children's actions.

The police will continue their inquiries and keep the public informed as they progress in this case.

Jesus was forced off with an apparent hamstring injury after his goal and assist propelled Arsenal to a 2-1 Champions League win over Sevilla on Tuesday, while Partey was ruled out due to an injury sustained in training.

Following the game, the pair underwent scans, with manager Mikel Arteta stating at his press conference on Friday that they will miss time.

Both players have already missed time this season owing to injury, with Jesus needing knee surgery in August and Partey only recently returning from a groin condition.

2023 Presidential Elections: Supreme Court Affirms Victory

Congratulatory messages continue to pour in for the president, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour party have expressed disappointment over the ruling of Supreme Court.

In a statement from its spokesman Debo Ologunagba the PDP said the verdict disappointed and “thrashed” the expectations of Nigerians.

The PDP accused the Supreme Court of condoning “serious issues of forgery, falsehood and perjury on the altar of technicalities, which has shaken the confidence of Nigerians in the judiciary.

It, however, urged “Nigerians not to be discouraged or allow the judgment to detract from their collective quest for the entrenchment of a credible electoral system.

The Labour Party on its part described the judgment as sad,.

National Chairman of the party, Julius Abure, while speaking at a press conference expressed surprised that the apex Court will toe the line of an earlier judgement in spite of all the what he described as flaws associated with the judgment delivered by the Presidential Election Appeal Tribunal.

He noted that despite the disappointment the party has chosen to trudge on and to remain optimistic of what the future holds for the nation.
