No Plans To Redenominate Naira – CBN Clarifies

The Central Bank of Nigeria has officially refuted claims of any intention to redenominate the country's currency, the naira, effective January 2024.

In a statement issued by Isa AbdulMumin, the Director of Corporate Communications at the CBN, this denial follows recent allegations that the central bank had plans to redenominate the national legal tender.

The CBN emphatically rejected these claims, emphasizing that there are no such plans in place to restructure or redenominate the naira. The statement further highlighted the wide circulation of a text message spreading this narrative, which, in actuality, the CBN had previously disputed.

The statement reads: "The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been drawn to the wide circulation of a text message suggesting that the bank plans to redenominate the country's legal tender, the naira, from January 2024. We are concerned that this narrative, which we had refuted before now, appears to be gaining traction with several debates on the implication of such a policy for the Nigerian economy."

The CBN clarified that the message's authors had manipulated text from an old policy move by a previous CBN governor in 2007 to make it seem recent.

The statement continues, "To avoid doubt, there is currently no plan by the bank to restructure and redenominate the naira. While the Bank may be considering reforms, such are subject to laid-down procedures in line with the provisions of the CBN Act, 2007."

The CBN strongly advised the public to disregard the news report, categorizing it as speculative and designed to incite panic within the country.

PDP Breaks Silence As Wike Fubara Meet Tinubu At Presidential Villa Abuja

Amidst the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a resounding call for a calm and peaceful resolution.

On Tuesday, October 31, 2023, the PDP's National Working Committee (NWC) released a statement emphasizing the need for dialogue and peaceful solutions in addressing the current political dispute. The NWC urged all parties involved in the disagreement to pursue a peaceful resolution and encouraged PDP members and supporters to remain composed.

The party assured the public that it had initiated internal conflict resolution processes to address and resolve all areas of contention.

The recent escalation of tension between Nyesome Wike and Siminalayi Fubara came to the forefront when an attempt to impeach Governor Fubara failed, raising concerns about the political stability of the state.

However, in a surprising turn of events, Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, were seen shaking hands at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. They, along with several other state governors, including Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Abdullahi Abba (Kano), and Bassey Ottu (Cross River), attended a closed-door meeting of the Police Council, chaired by President Bola Tinubu.

The meeting also included notable figures such as the chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

Afro Nation Cancels Lagos Show

Afro Nation made a regrettable announcement on Tuesday, revealing the cancellation of the highly anticipated Afrobeat’s festival initially planned to take place at Tafawa Belewa Square in Lagos.

Afro Nation, an annual three-day music festival organized by Live Nation, Event Horizon, Smade Entertainment, and Memories of Tomorrow, had been scheduled to hold its inaugural edition in Nigeria on December 19-20 in Lagos.

In a statement issued by the organizers through their official account, they expressed their disappointment in cancelling the event. The statement conveyed their deep commitment to delivering high-quality shows, but they found it currently unfeasible to meet the standards that Nigeria deserves in December 2023.

The statement read: "Unfortunately, the Afro Nation Nigeria festival in Lagos will now not be taking place. As event organizers, we hold ourselves to extremely high standards, and it has become clear to us that it is currently not possible to deliver a show that is of the quality that Nigeria deserves in December 2023."

The organizers also emphasized their role in the Afrobeat’s community, providing a platform for artists to connect with their fans and promoting cultural events worldwide. They highlighted their successful shows in various locations, including Portugal, Ghana, Puerto Rico, Miami, and Detroit. They expressed their special connection with Nigeria and their disappointment at being unable to celebrate with the Nigerian audience this year.

However, they reassured their commitment to creating a remarkable Afro Nation show in Lagos in the future, aiming to provide an event that everyone can take pride in.

The organizers concluded by expressing their appreciation for the support they have received from fans and promised to return soon for another unforgettable event.

Court Adjourns Case Seeking Uzodinma’s Sack

The Supreme Court has rescheduled the hearing for the application filed by the All-Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), which seeks to remove Hope Uzodinma from his position as the governor of Imo State. The new date for the hearing is December 5.

Originally, the apex court had set October 31, 2023, as the date for commencing the hearing on this matter. APGA applied in 2020, arguing that there should have been a fresh election in Imo State after the Supreme Court nullified the election of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Emeka Ihedioha.

APGA contended that the Supreme Court did not rule on the validity of Uzodinma's candidacy, as Ihedioha and the PDP did not challenge it in the appeal marked SC/1462/2019.

After three years since the application was initially filed, the Supreme Court finally scheduled the hearing for Tuesday. However, when journalists arrived at the Supreme Court on that day, they discovered that the case was not listed on the court's cause list.

One of the Supreme Court registrars informed the journalists that the case had been moved to December 5.

No specific reasons were provided for the postponement of the case.
