Ian Baraclough: Northern Ireland Manager To Have Contract Extended

Ian Baraclough will continue as Northern Ireland manager beyond the 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign after the Irish Football Association agreed to extend his contract.

Negotiations regarding the length of the extension are ongoing.

Baraclough took the role on an 18-month contract back in June 2020 following the departure of Michael O'Neill.

That deal was set to expire upon the conclusion of the current qualifying campaign.

The 50-year-old has long made clear his desire to stay beyond the initial deal, repeatedly stating his intention to expand the existing player pool and bringing through a new generation of young players with an eye on Euro 2024.

He stepped into the role having previously managed the under-21s when O'Neill was at the helm of the senior side.

Early in Baraclough's tenure Northern Ireland reached the Euro 2020 play-off final but lost to Slovakia, while their hopes of reaching next year's World Cup in Qatar were ended with three games remaining following a defeat by Switzerland earlier this month.

England Women’s Manager Sarina Wiegman To Wait On Choosing Permanent Captain

England manager Sarina Wiegman says she is not yet ready to choose a permanent Lionesses captain.

Arsenal defender Leah Williamson captained the side in last month's World Cup qualifiers against Luxembourg and North Macedonia.

She will lead the side in the next two qualifiers - against Northern Ireland on Saturday and in Latvia on Tuesday.

When asked if she had made a decision on the captaincy going forward, Wiegman said: "I just need that time."

Williamson wore the armband for the first time in the absence of the injured Steph Houghton, who has captained the Lionesses since 2014.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes Wiegman should make her decision public, regardless of injuries.

Nigeria To Lose Over 25 Million Naira Daily

The federal government of Nigeria is expected to lose more than N25 million daily following the decision of the Nigerian Railway Corporation to suspend its activities due on the Abuja-Kaduna corridor. The NRC said its rail track was vandalized .

According to the corporation, efforts were being put in place to ensure absolute safety along the route.

It added that further information concerning the suspension will be conveyed to the public shortly.

Although NRC was silent of the cause of safety concerns that necessitated the suspension of the Abuja- Kaduna train services, trending photos on social media showed a train operator cockpit with shattered windshield, suggesting that the train came under attack.

The Abuja-Kaduna road has been a den of bandits who attack vehicles on the highway, killing and, most times, kidnapping travellers. This has forced many travellers to opt for train services to commute between the nation’s capital and Kaduna, one of the important cities in the North
