Max Verstappen Holds On For United States GP Win

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen fended off a late challenge from title rival Lewis Hamilton to win the US Grand Prix.

Verstappen’s impressively mature victory, taken in controlled style in a tense strategic battle, extended his championship lead to 12 points with five races to go.

Hamilton took the lead at the start but lost it when Verstappen made an early first pit stop and tried an off-set strategy aimed at fighting for the win in the final laps.

The Mercedes was on Verstappen’s tail with two laps to go but it was not enough.

It was a gripping battle held in front of 140,000 spectators at a packed Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, at the end of a weekend on which Formula 1 felt like its popularity in the US had reached new levels.

Hamilton crossed the line just 1.3 seconds behind after one of the most hard-fought races of a classic grand prix season.

The Mexican Grand Prix comes up next in two weeks’ time – usually a happy hunting ground for Red Bull, Mercedes fear another defeat. If that transpires, Hamilton will have a mountain to climb in the final four races.

Liverpool Put 5 Against Manchester United In EPL

Manchester United suffered one of their most humiliating defeats in recent memory as rivals Liverpool piled pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in a 5-0 annihilation which saw Mohamed Salah score a hat-trick and Paul Pogba get his 3rd red card in United colours.

United's performance was nothing short of shambolic as Liverpool feasted on inept defending and questionable tactics, going ahead after five minutes through Naby Keita's low finish having been released through on goal.

Diogo Jota made it 2-0 at the far post from Trent Alexander-Arnold's centre after miscommunication between Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, before Salah scored for the 10th straight game in all competitions, converting near post from Keita's pass.

Salah then completed his hat-trick, touching past David de Gea from Henderson's excellent pass, and the hosts went down to 10 men as half-time substitute Pogba saw red for a high tackle on Keita, who was brought off on a stretcher.

United somehow saw out the game without more damage, but having conceded 11 goals in three games, and sitting eight points off the top of a Premier League they had promised to challenge for after a busy summer window, pressure on Solskjaer is at an all-time high.

Liverpool move second after a dazzling display, and remain unbeaten since May after Jurgen Klopp's 200th win as manager, reaching the milestone in fewer games than any other Reds coach.

October 25, 2021 Real Sociedad Go Top Of La Liga Table After Draw With Atletico Madrid

Real Sociedad Go Top Of La Liga Table After Draw With Atletico Madrid

Real Sociedad went back to the top of La Liga, after being held to a 2-2 draw by reigning champions, Atletico Madrid.

Luis Suarez scored a brace for the home side who survived a scare after going 2 goals down against the visitors.

La Real, who last won the title in 1982, led 2-0 when Alexander Isak set up Alexander Sorloth for the opener and then curled in a free-kick.

But Suarez pulled one back with a header from Joao Felix's cross.

And the veteran levelled with a penalty to make it 2-2 after he had been fouled by Mikel Merino.

Real Sociedad are one point above Real Madrid, who had gone top with a 2-1 win at Barcelona earlier in the day.

Third-placed Sevilla beat Levante 5-3 in Sunday's early game and Atletico are fourth - three points behind the leaders.

David Alaba Scores First Madrid Goal In El Classico

Real Madrid beat Barcelona in a new-look El Clasico to briefly go top of La Liga and leave Ronald Koeman's side down in eighth in the table.

It was the very first Clasico without Barca Legend Lionel Messi or Real icon Sergio Ramos - who both joined Paris St-Germain in the summer - since 2004.

David Alaba started and finished a counter-attack for the first, which was his first goal in a Madrid shirt and Lucas Vazquez got a second in added time.

Sergio Aguero scored his first Barca goal but it was almost the last kick.

Alaba's goal was the best of the game. The former Bayern Munich defender won the ball from Barca striker Memphis Depay on the edge of his box before starting a counter-attack.

He finished it off by running on to Rodrygo's pass before slamming a shot across home keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen into the far corner.

The final two goals came in injury time with Vazquez tapping in after Marco Asensio's shot was saved by Ter Stegen.

Substitute Aguero tapped in Sergino Dest's cross, in what was only Barcelona's second shot on target, but the final whistle went seconds later.

Madrid ended the day one point behind Real Sociedad at the top after the Basque side drew Sunday's late game 2-2 with Atletico Madrid.
