Emma Raducanu Claim First Win Since US Open Triumph

Emma Raducanu impressively fought back at the Transylvania Open to earn her first win since becoming the US Open champion.

The 18-year-old British player was beaten in the second round at Indian Wells following that historic victory at Flushing Meadows last month.

But the world number 23, seeded three in Romania, had the perfect response against 30-year-old Slovenian, Polona Hercog.

Playing in her father Ian's homeland for the first time, Raducanu won 4-6 7-5 6-1 to move into the second round of the competition.

Despite being a Grand Slam champion, this was her first WTA tour win and although no fans were allowed in Cluj-Napoca due to Covid-19 restrictions, her 88-year-old grandmother Niculina, who resides in Bucharest, was present for the hard-fought victory.

Raducanu, still looking for a new coach after parting with Andrew Richardson following her US Open triumph, asked for patience before the WTA 250 event.

Yet, playing a far more experienced opponent in a match lasting two hours and 29 minutes, she managed to prevail and eventually win the grueling encounter to set up a match with Romania's world number 106, 28-year-old, Ana Bogdan.

Arsenal Extend Unbeaten Run To 8 Games After Win Against Leeds United

Calum Chambers scored with his first touch after coming on as a substitute to help Arsenal secure a 2-0 victory over Leeds in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Chambers made an instant impact Just 23 seconds after replacing Ben White - who Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta revealed after the game had been struggling with illness - heading Nicolas Pepe's knockback inches over the goal line despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

The Gunners made the game safe when former Leeds loanee Eddie Nketiah pounced on Liam Cooper's poor defensive header before lifting the ball over the onrushing Meslier.

Nketiah, who made just two league starts in 17 appearances for Leeds during the 2019/20 season before having his loan spell cut short at Elland Road, almost fluffed his lines in front of an open goal, but his scuffed shot found the net to seal Arsenal's spot in the quarter-finals.

Chelsea In Carabao Cup Final 8 After Penalty Shootout Win Over Southampton

Chelsea progressed to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup as they beat fellow Premier League counterparts Southampton on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Reece James scored the decisive spot-kick for the league leaders after Theo Walcott and Will Smallbone failed to hit the target with their efforts for the Saints.

Both sides had made several changes ahead of the tie, with Chelsea bringing in six different players from the 7-0 Premier League win against Norwich at the weekend while nine players came in for the visitors.

The hosts settled better into their rhythm and took the lead a minute before half time when Kai Havertz headed home his third goal of the season from a corner.

However, Southampton responded two minutes after the restart when Che Adams stabbed in from close range after Kepa spilled Kyle Walker-Peters' shot.

The goals brought the game to life as play then swung quickly from one end to the other.

Fraser Forster prevented the hosts from regaining the lead when he tipped over a James drive following a short free-kick, while substitute Shane Long headed wide for the visitors.

Smallbone almost marked his return to the first team after nine months out following an ACL injury with the winner, but his late header was saved by Kepa, who then produced two brilliant stops in stoppage time to deny Lyanco and Mohammed Salisu.

Those proved crucial as Chelsea came out on top in the penalty shootout to keep themselves firmly in the hunt for silverware this season.

The quarter-final draw is on Saturday at 10:30 WAT.
