Imo Assembly Deputy Speaker, Iwuanyanwu, Impeached

The Deputy Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Amara Iwuanyanwu has been removed from his position.

The incident happened under tight security during plenary on Tuesday.

The lawmaker representing Orlu State Constituency, Ekene Nnodim submitted a resolution signed by 18 out of the 27 lawmakers for the removal of Iwuanyanwu as the Deputy Speaker.

The Speaker, Paul Emezim, who presided over the plenary, okayed Iwuanyanwu’s removal.

The House recalled six suspended lawmakers of the state legislature.

Recall that a similar incident happened in Plateau State last week, as the speaker of the State House Assembly, Abok Ayuba Nuhu was impeached amid corruption allegations.

His impeachment occurred at plenary last Thursday after 16 out of 24 members of the Assembly voted him out.

Supreme Court Describes Invasion Of Justice Odili’s Residence As Impunity Taken Too Far

The Supreme Court in Abuja has broken its silence on the alleged unlawful invasion of Justice Mary Odili of the court by unknown security operatives, describing it as an impunity taken too far.

The apex court warned that the judiciary should not be misconstrued by any individual or institution of government as the weeping child among the three arms of government.

In its first reaction to the situation, the Supreme Court in a statement by its Director of Press and Information, Dr. Akande Festus, said that the attack was an uncivilized and shameful show of primitive force on the innocent judicial officer.

The Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria also held a meeting behind closed doors, with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami over the siege on the home of Justice Mary Odili.

Speaking on behalf of the SANs at the Federal Ministry of Justice Abuja, shortly after the meeting, Adegboyega Awomolo, said they were concerned about the incident.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission Mahmood Yakubu, says the commission has done everything within its capacity to ensure that the Anambra governorship election holds on Saturday.

Yakubu spoke on Tuesday during a meeting with members of the inter-agency consultative committee on election security in Awka, the Anambra capital.

Speaking on election safety, he said security agencies have also done everything within their power to ensure that the environment is secured for the conduct of a free and fair election.

Speaking to the stakeholders, the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali assured that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure a hitch-free election.

Lagos Government Says Collapsed 21-Storey Building Was Shut Down For Months Due To Structural Defects

Lagos Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat says the collapsed luxury building in Ikoyi was shut down for months because it was unsafe and failed structural tests.

Mr. Hamzat was speaking with journalists at the site of the collapse where rescue operations remain ongoing with 20 bodies so far recovered and 9 people rescued.

Hamzat explained that the building was shut down for some months after some anomalies were noticed by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).

On the ongoing rescue operation, the deputy governor said, it was unclear the number of people trapped under the collapsed building.

The Lagos State Government is setting up an independent panel to probe the collapse of the 21-storey building on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed that the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Gbolahan Oki, an architect, be suspended from work immediately.

He assured that has said the government will surely find out what went wrong and punish those indicted.
