11 OAU Students Face Fraud Trial With Varsity And EFCC

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, is in discussions with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following the apprehension of 69 individuals suspected of internet fraud, including numerous university students. Subsequently, 58 of these students were released late on Wednesday.

In a midnight operation, EFCC officials conducted a raid on hostels near the OAU campus, including Fine Touch and Superb hostels in Oduduwa Estate, Ile-Ife. They entered rooms and apprehended the students. The Students' Union President, Akinremi Ojo, expressed concern, noting that the union had information about "72 students picked up from the hostel, with their phones and cars confiscated." He demanded the students' release while criticizing the arrests' manner.

Joy Abiola, a former union official, reported that the students were subjected to physical violence during the arrests. Abiola explained that EFCC officials arrived between 1:40 a.m. and 4:00 a.m., emphasizing that only students resided in those hostels. She questioned the justification for arresting individuals with iPhones, laptops, and cars, as some of the students were technology enthusiasts.

Videos circulated by students showed them being forcibly loaded into a white Hummer bus by security personnel. In another video, a convoy of vehicles, including the white Hummer Bus, departed Ile-Ife for the EFCC zonal office in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

Subsequently, the EFCC issued a statement on its verified Facebook page, confirming the arrest of 69 suspects in Ile-Ife but refraining from disclosing whether they were students. The agency stated that the arrests were based on actionable intelligence related to suspected fraudulent internet activities in the Oduduwa Estate area.

The arrested individuals have reportedly provided statements to the EFCC and will be charged in court once investigations are completed. In response, OAU students and union officers protested at the EFCC office in Ibadan, demanding the release of their colleagues while facing a heavy security presence.

The Osun Joint Campus Committee of the National Association of Nigerian Students also denounced the arrests, highlighting the lack of justification and evidence for invading the students' residences and transporting them to Ibadan.

The Public Relations Officer of the university, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed that the university's management was in discussions with EFCC officials. He further noted that 58 students had been released, while the remaining 11 faced legal proceedings.

Ajaero In Hospital Battles To Save Right Eye

Medical professionals at the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Owerri are currently engaged in a challenging effort to preserve the eyesight of Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress. Ajaero's ordeal began when he was reportedly apprehended by officers from the Imo State Police Command while leading a protest in the state last Wednesday.

In contrast, the police command maintains that they were acting to rescue Ajaero from a potentially dangerous mob, subsequently placing him in protective custody. Ajaero's harrowing journey to the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri was captured in a viral video, wherein he was seen seated between two individuals. In the video, the NLC leader indicated that he did not have a phone with him but expressed hope that a family member employed at FUTHO could assist.

Concurrently, officials from the Nigeria Labour Congress strongly condemned the incident, characterising it as a reprehensible attempted murder. Benson Upah, the NLC's Head of Information and Publicity, labelled Ajaero's treatment as a case of abduction that had escalated into an attempted murder.

Upah disclosed, "Contact was established with Congress President Joe Ajaero this evening around 15:30 hours at the Police Hospital in Owerri, where he was subsequently transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri for medical care. He had been severely brutalised, with his right eye completely swollen shut at the time of contact."

Rivers State Police Clarify Governor’s Involvement In Protest Incident

The Rivers State Police Command has explained the incident involving an attack on the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, during a protest at the State House of Assembly complex in Port Harcourt on Monday.

According to the police, the attack was not intentional, and their actions were aimed at dispersing protesters and ensuring the governor's safety from potential arsonists causing mayhem.

In a statement released by the state's police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, on Wednesday, the police clarified the sequence of events. The statement read, "Following credible intelligence indicating the intention of an armed group to cause disturbance in Port Harcourt, particularly at the State House of Assembly on Monday, October 30, and considering the recent incident of arson at the State House of Assembly under investigation, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations deployed armed police officers under his supervision to intercept the 'hoodlums' and protect lives and property within the State House of Assembly and its surroundings."

Upon arriving at the complex's entrance, the police noticed a large group of youths protesting, attempting to gain access to the complex, potentially causing a breach of peace. In response, the police deployed non-lethal crowd control measures, including tear gas and water cannons, to disperse the unruly and uncontrollable protesters.

However, a short while later, another group of aggressive individuals approached the complex's entrance, and the police responded similarly. During this encounter, the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, was observed to be present among the crowd. The police expressed their surprise and shock at the governor's unexpected presence, as there had yet to be prior communication with the police about the governor's visit to the incident scene. Typically, security protocols call for the police to accompany the governor and ensure his safety, especially in light of the security threat intelligence.

In light of the situation, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Operations took immediate security measures to ensure the governor's protection and safety. At the same time, he and his entourage assessed the extent of the damage caused by the fire incident. The police emphasised that they did not deliberately target or attempt to harm the governor or anyone else, let alone the Chief Executive and security officer of the state, as some reports suggested.

The statement concluded that the Rivers State Police Command had implemented sufficient security measures to de-escalate the situation and restore complete calm in the affected areas. The police's explanation aimed to clarify the circumstances of the incident and underscore their primary responsibility of safeguarding the governor's and public's safety and security.

Inter Miami’s China Tour Canceled, Disappointing Messi Fans

Inter Miami's eagerly anticipated plan to play two games in China this month, featuring football legend Lionel Messi, has been called off, the club announced on Wednesday. Inter Miami revealed that the cancellation was at the behest of the tour's promoter, citing "unforeseen circumstances in China" in an online statement.

The tour organizer also confirmed the cancellation in a post on a Chinese social media platform, expressing deep regret for the decision but refraining from providing specific reasons for the change in plans.

Originally, the team was set to play two friendly matches against Chinese Super League teams, with the first match against Qingdao Hainiu scheduled for Sunday and the second against Chengdu Rongcheng three days later.

Lionel Messi, the recent World Cup champion, enjoys immense popularity in China, where the men's national team has faced challenges in recent years and the domestic league has grappled with corruption-related issues. Messi's visit to China has traditionally been met with great enthusiasm from football fans.

In June, Messi led the Argentinian national team to a 2-0 victory over Australia in an international friendly match, delighting thousands of fans in Argentina, known for their blue-and-white striped jerseys.

The 36-year-old football icon was recently awarded his eighth Ballon d'Or trophy in Paris, further solidifying his record as the player with the most Ballon d'Or awards in history, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo's five.

Messi's arrival at Inter Miami in July substantially impacted the club's global social media following. The team achieved a significant milestone on the field by winning its first trophy with a Leagues Cup triumph in August.

The cancellation of the China tour is undoubtedly disappointing for both Inter Miami and Messi's enthusiastic Chinese fans. However, it underscores the unpredictability and challenges faced in organising international sports events, and fans will eagerly await the next opportunity to see Messi in action.
