Cooking Gas Shortage Grips Lagos And Several Other States

Liquefied petroleum gas, commonly known as cooking gas, is currently in short supply in Lagos and various other states nationwide.

Our correspondents have identified the following affected states: Katsina, Sokoto, Delta, Kaduna, and Kano.

The price of this essential commodity has been steadily rising since late last month, leading to escalating costs for consumers. Notably, gas terminal owners had raised prices by 66% in October alone. The cost of a 20-metric-ton load of cooking gas increased from N10 million at the beginning of the previous month to N16 million by the end of the same month, even though the NLNG (Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas) was supplying 20 MT of cooking gas to them at N9 million.

A market survey over the weekend revealed that a 12.5-kg cylinder of cooking gas is now selling for prices ranging from N13,500 to N14,000 on the black market. Some traders noted that gas plant owners are now selling to them at prices between N1,100 and N1,200 per kg since they cannot access an adequate supply.

In June, the price for a 12.5-kg cylinder was approximately N8,700. By September, it had risen to N10,200, and as of Saturday, the cost had surged to a range between N13,500 and N14,000.

In a conversation with Oladapo Olatunbosun, the President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, it was revealed that there is currently an insufficient supply of cooking gas in Lagos State. Olatunbosun also mentioned that in his gas plant, he sells at N950 per 1kg, urging the public to be cautious and avoid patronizing those without gas plants, as they would add their profit margins, exacerbating the challenges faced by the country.

Falana Urges Akpabio And Others To Cease Unlawful Pension Collection

Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), the Chairman of the Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond, has issued an appeal to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other former governors to discontinue the practice of collecting pensions as ex-governors.

As a human rights lawyer, Falana encouraged former governors to follow the example set by Gbenga Daniel, the former governor of Ogun State, and Ibrahim Dankwambo, the former governor of Gombe State. Highlighting the actions of the Houses of Assembly in Kwara, Imo, and Zamfara states, which have abolished the Governors Pension Scheme, Falana urged other state assemblies to follow suit promptly.

In a statement released on Sunday, Falana also referenced a significant legal judgment delivered on November 26, 2019, by Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo (retd.), which deemed the payment of pensions to former governors as illegal and unconstitutional.

This judgment resulted from a lawsuit filed by an advocacy group, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, challenging the constitutional validity of pension payments to former governors in Nigeria. In the suit marked as FHC/L/CS/1497/2017, Justice Oguntoyinbo declared the pension payments illegal and unconstitutional. Consequently, she ordered the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice to recover the life pensions received by former governors serving as senators and ministers.

Falana emphasized that, in compliance with both judgments, Daniel and Dankwambo had requested the governors of Ogun and Gombe States, respectively, to cease the payment of these controversial pensions.

Falana stated, "This is a commendable step, particularly when more than 20 former governors in both the executive and legislative branches of government are receiving dual salaries. In light of these developments, we call upon Senator Akpabio and other former governors in both the executive and legislative branches to follow the example set by Senators Daniel and Dankwambo by immediately rejecting the receipt of these unlawful pensions.

She claims that the Marlian Music leader added illicit substances to her children's food and beverages during their visit to his home, and she asserts that there were eyewitnesses to this act.

Ojo, one of the celebrities seeking justice for Mohbad, who tragically passed away after alleged bullying by Naira Marley and his associate, Sam Larry, explained that she chose not to support Naira Marley due to his actions towards her children.

In a video circulating on social media, Ojo stated, "Is it the same Naira Marley I thought was a sensible person? Even when my children went to his house, he would lace their food and drinks with drugs. Do you want me to support someone like that? The Naira Marley and Sam Larry you're defending have many allegations to address. When my children visited his home, he drugged their drinks, and two or three people can vouch for that."
