Lagos Government Says Collapsed 21-Storey Building Was Shut Down For Months Due To Structural Defects

Lagos Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat says the collapsed luxury building in Ikoyi was shut down for months because it was unsafe and failed structural tests.

Mr. Hamzat was speaking with journalists at the site of the collapse where rescue operations remain ongoing with 20 bodies so far recovered and 9 people rescued.

Hamzat explained that the building was shut down for some months after some anomalies were noticed by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).

On the ongoing rescue operation, the deputy governor said, it was unclear the number of people trapped under the collapsed building.

The Lagos State Government is setting up an independent panel to probe the collapse of the 21-storey building on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed that the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Gbolahan Oki, an architect, be suspended from work immediately.

He assured that has said the government will surely find out what went wrong and punish those indicted.

Search And Rescue Operation Continues At The Site Of Collapsed 21-Storey Building In Ikoyi

Next is report that search and rescue operations are ongoing at the site of a 21-storey building that collapsed yesterday on Gerard Road in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State.

Already no fewer than 10 persons were feared dead while four were rescued with varying degrees of injury from the building.

As of the time of filing this report, many people were still trapped in the rubble, including the Managing Director, Fourscore Heights Limited, Mr. Femi Osibona, who owned the building, and some of his clients and engineers.

While speaking to Inspiration FM, the General Manager of the State Emergency Management Agency, Femi Osanyintolu said heavy duty equipment has been deployed to aid the search and rescue operation.

On the report that the owner of the building ignored the 15-floor approval for the construction of a 21 storey building, Dr. Osanyintolu said investigation is ongoing to ascertain the claim.

One of the workers, who survived the incident, said that many persons were still trapped in the rubble.

Security Operatives Hunt For Gunmen Who Kidnapped 6 People University Of Abuja Staff Quarters

A professor of economics, Obansa Joseph, two of his children, and others unidentified have been kidnapped by gunmen who stormed the staff quarters of the University of Abuja.

A resident said the gunmen invaded the senior staff quarters at Giri in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory in the early hours of today and operated for about an hour.

The names of the professor’s two children abducted during the attack could not be confirmed as of the time of filing this report.

The identities of the other victims who were kidnapped are also unclear but the university’s spokesman, Habib Yakoob, confirmed the development, saying the victims are six in number.

He, however, added that security operatives have been mobilized to secure their freedom.
