Scotland Stun Denmark At Home To Earn A Playoff Spot Ahead Of Qatar 2022

Scotland secured a well-deserved spot in the World Cup play-off semi-finals as goals from John Souttar and Che Adams stunned Denmark with a thrilling performance on home turf at Hampden Park.

Scotland started with real intent, being aided by the thundering sounds of the packed stands, as they began at a frenetic pace.

Steve Clarke's Group F runners-up needed at least a point against the runaway leaders to give themselves a chance of a home draw.

However, Denmark survived the early pressure to create the first chance after 10 minutes and remind Scotland of their threat.

But centre-half Souttar headed home in his first Scotland game since being sent off in a 2018 defeat by Israel and striker Adams burst clear to settle growing nerves after 86 minutes.

Scotland had narrowly edged it after a couple of nervy results in the qualifiers but found some renaissance and left it late in the closing stages before that breakaway goal secured a sixth competitive victory in succession for the first time since winning six Home Nations matches in a row between March 1928 and February 1930.

The victory ended Denmark's six-game winning run since losing 2-1 to England at the semi-final stage of the Euro 2020 finals this summer and ensured they fell short of ending their qualification campaign with a 100% record.

England were completely ruthless as they were relentlessly put FIFA's 210th and lowest-ranked nation San Marino to the sword, with the scoreline ending in double digits in favour of Gareth Southgate's men.

Harry Kane scored four goals and moved up to third in England's all-time scoring charts as the Three Lions booked their ticket to the 2022 World Cup with a 10-0 demolition of San Marino.

Harry Maguire headed the opening goal for the second successive game before England took the game out of sight in the second half. Emile Smith Rowe and Tyrone Mings opened their international accounts and Bukayo Saka and Tammy Abraham joined them on the congested scoresheet as the Three Lions hit double figures in a competitive match for the first time.

Kane, fresh from scoring a first-half hat-trick against Albania repeated the feat inside 39 minutes at Olimpico di Serravalle and became the first England player since Ian Wright in 1993 to score four goals in a single game as he took his international goals tally to 48 - level with Gary Lineker in the all-time scoring charts.

Victory completes an assured World Cup Qualification campaign for England, their seventh-successive World Cup finals appearance, where Gareth Southgate will hope to build on an encouraging campaign ahead of a busy 2022 for the Three Lions.

Poland, who finished in 2nd place, 6 points behind England can set their sights on Qatar 2022 after securing a playoff spot.

Northern Ireland Secure Draw To Deny Italy Automatic World Cup Qualification

Northern Ireland Secure Draw

Northern Ireland produced their best performance of the qualifying campaign to earn a shock 0-0 draw that denied Italy automatic World Cup qualification.

An outstanding second-half performance from Northern Ireland in front of a raucous Windsor Park crowd almost supplied a win that would have been one of the biggest giant killing acts in their footballing history.

George Saville and Stuart Dallas had both come close to scoring with good opportunities before substitute Conor Washington raced onto a long ball in the 90th minute and beat the outrushing Donnarumma to the ball.

The Charlton Athletic striker was clear on goal and should have put the thrilling fixture to bed but he failed to catch his left-foot shot cleanly and it allowed Italy captain Leonardo Bonucci to get back and clear off his line.

The draw secured a third-place finish in the table for Ian Baraclough's men.

Roberto Mancini's men, who came into the match ahead of the Swiss on goal difference, must now prepare for a play-off in March, having missed out on the last World Cup by losing a play-off to Sweden.

Switzerland, who went into Monday night's final qualifying matches in second place, came through to win the group by hammering Bulgaria 4-0.

Switzerland's win over Bulgaria means they top Group C and European champions Italy must face a play-off for a place in Qatar.

South African FA Push For Replay Of World Cup Qualifier

South Africa are set to lodge a "formal complaint" about "questionable decisions" which marred the officiating in Sunday's 1-0 defeat by Ghana.

Bafana Bafana needed a draw to reach the third and final round of African qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, but Ghana won with a controversial penalty.

The penalty was awarded after Ghana's Leicester City midfielder Daniel Amartey went down following what appeared minimal contact from defender Rushine de Reuck, who was booked for his challenge.

South Africa Football Association's (SAFA) chief executive Tebogo Mothlante was vocal about the association's displeasure.

"The match officials have decided the game, which is not what is supposed to happen," he claimed,

"We will be writing to both CAF [the Confederation of African Football] and [world governing body] Fifa - firstly to investigate how the game was handled and secondly to challenge some of these decisions.

"We have already registered with the match commissioner that we will be making a formal complaint."

South Africa understands that the grounds for matches to be replayed does exist.

They were forced to replay a 2018 World Cup qualifier against Senegal after the referee was found guilty of match manipulation.

The South Africans had originally beaten Senegal 2-1, with Fifa later concluding that Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey - 'with the sole purpose of facilitating a minimum number of goals to make certain bets successful - clearly took two wrong decisions'.

The Black Stars' narrow win enabled them to reach the African World Cup play-offs by the narrowest of margins, ousting South Africa at the top of the group on goals scored.
