Australia Test-Captain Steps Down Over Sexting Scandal

Australian cricketer Tim Paine has stepped down as captain of the national Test team less than three weeks before The Ashes over a sexting exchange with a former colleague.

The 36-year-old had been expected to lead the line for his side in the series against England which commences in Brisbane on December 8, but made the "incredibly difficult decision" to abdicate the role.

The wicketkeeper-batsman did not shed light on the nature of the messages in his resignation speech, but Cricket Australia's (CA) news website referred to it as "revelations of a sexting incident involving a former Cricket Tasmania employee in 2017".

Cricket Australia has accepted the resignation and would appoint a new captain, but added the Tasmanian would be available for selection for the forthcoming series.

Fast bowler Pat Cummins is the current vice-captain and most likely choice to become the team's new leader.

Paine was unexpectedly elevated to become Australia's 46th Test captain after Steve Smith's ban following the infamous ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in 2018.

While the duty of captain was thrust upon him, he has drawn lauding for his execution of the demanding dual roles of captain and wicketkeeper, especially in Australia's 2019 Ashes triumph in England.

Speaking to reporters in Hobart, Paine said: "It's an incredibly difficult decision but the right one for me, my family and cricket.

"As a background on my decision, nearly four years ago I was involved in a text exchange with a then colleague.

Serena Williams Says Peng Shuai Case Should Be Investigated

American great Serena Williams lends voice to the case of Chinese player Peng Shuai, says the case "must be investigated" and urged people "not to stay silent" about her welfare.

35-year-old Peng, has not been heard from since she made sexual assault allegations against a leading Chinese government official two weeks ago.

Chinese state media has released an email attributed to Peng, but doubt has been cast about its authenticity.

"I hope she is safe and found as soon as possible," said Serena Williams.

Concern for Peng's general welfare has continued to grow since she said she was "forced" into a sexual relationship with former China vice-premier Zhang Gaoli.

The allegations were made in a post on Chinese social media site Weibo on 3 November and soon deleted from China's internet.

The incident is the first time such claims have been made against a senior Chinese political leader.

Chairman of the Women's Tennis Association, Steve Simon said Peng deserved "to be heard, not censored" on the allegations.

Williams is one of many leading players to speak out about Peng's welfare, following men's world number one Novak Djokovic and Japan's four-time major winner Naomi Osaka.

Spartak Moscow And Quincy Promes Charged With Attempted Murder

Spartak Moscow and Netherlands footballer Quincy Promes will be charged and prosecuted for attempted manslaughter and assault after stabbing a family member last year.

Promes has accusations levelled against him, precisely seriously injuring a relative's knee in an attack at a family party in July 2020.

The unidentified relative suffered serious knee injuries and filed a complaint with the police last November.

The 29-year-old midfielder was arrested and held in custody for two nights while police interrogated him over the incident last December.

The Dutch International has not claimed any wrongdoing and denied the allegations.

Promes, who played for Ajax in the Netherlands between 2019 and 2021, has been named as the suspect in Dutch media reports.

Prosecutors on Thursday said they had decided to bring forward charges of attempted manslaughter and assault against a 29-year-old from Amsterdam and further claimed the incident happened at a family party in Abcoude, a town just outside Amsterdam.

Dutch national broadcaster NOS said stabbings can be punishable by prison sentences of 24 to 42 months.

The date of the court hearing is yet to be determined.
