FIFA’s Best Awards Nominees Shortlist Released

World football governing body, FIFA have unveiled the nominees for The Best Awards 2021, with the winners to be revealed in a virtual ceremony on January 17, 2022.

The candidates for each category were selected by expert panels in women's and men's football, which included Eniola Aluko, Emma Byrne and Marta Tejedor, as well as Tim Cahill, David Trezeguet and Alexi Lalas.

Public voting for each award will be open from November 22 until December 10, 2021, and FIFA will eventually announce three finalists for each award by January 2022.

There are 6 award categories in total.

Barcelona’s Pedri Named 2021 Golden Boy

Barcelona midfielder Pedri has claimed the 2021 Golden Boy award for the best under-21 player playing in a European country's top division.

Pedri - who joined Barca from Las Palmas in 2020 signed a new deal with the Catalan giants In October which includes a 1bn euro (£846m) release clause.

18-year-old Pedri, beat England and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham to the accolade by a record 199 points.

Pedri played more minutes than any other Barca player last season, going on to play at Euro 2020 and win Olympic silver with Spain.

He has unfortunately been out of action since September because of a thigh injury.

The Spanish teenager succeeds Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Braut Haaland who won the Golden Boy award in 2020.

 The inaugural award which was assigned in 2003, has also been won by the likes of Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Kylian Mbappe.

England Manager Gareth Southgate Extends Contract Till 2024

England manager Gareth Southgate has penned a new contract to keep him in the role until December 2024.

Southgate, who has been manager of the English national side since November 2016, former contract was set to run out after the 2022 winter World Cup in Qatar.

He has been credited with providing the team with their best men's performance in 55 years - in July – leading England to the final of Euro 2020.

Southgate will be overseeing England's progress at next year's World Cup, which runs from 21 November-18 December, and the qualification stages for Euro 2024, with the tournament taking place from 14 June-14 July.

"It remains an incredible privilege to lead this team. We have a great opportunity in front of us," he said.

His assistant manager Steve Holland has also agreed a new deal through to the end of 2024.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the players and support team for their hard work," Southgate said.

"I know they and the fans are all excited about what this squad could achieve in future."

It has been allegedly reported, the new contract will increase Southgate's salary to between £5-6m a year.

SERAP Slams President Buhari With Lawsuit Over Non-Disclosure Of N6trn NDDC Fund Looters

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Muhammadu Buhari over alleged financial misappropriation within the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

This was contained in a lawsuit filed by SERAP lawyers Kolawole Oluwadare and Opeyemi Owolabi, at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

According to the Organisation, this suit is due to the failure of President BUHARI “to publish the names of those indicted in the alleged misappropriation of over N6 trillion in the running of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) between 2000 and 2019, as documented in the recent Forensic Audit Report on NDDC.

SERAP also sought “an order of mandamus to direct and compel President BUHARI to publish the names of those indicted in the alleged misappropriation of over N6trn in the running of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) between 2000 and 2019.

The suit, which has been assigned to Justice Binta Nyako at Court 2, is fixed for hearing on 29th November 2021.
