FG Faults UK’s Red Listing Of Nigeria Over Covid-19 Omicron Variant

The federal government has expressed disappointment over the United Kingdom government’s placement of Nigeria on its red list following the detection of the COVID-19 Omicron variant.

Reacting less than twenty-four hours, after the UK announced its plan, Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, said the move by the British government was ill-advised, pointing out that it would have multiple impacts on commerce, and disrupt activities during the Christmas and New Year festivities.

The Minister of Health however ruled out the possibility of restricting foreign travelers from visiting Nigeria despite travel bans on the country by Canada, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Ehanire described as unfortunate the knee-jerk reaction of some countries to the Omicron strain, noting that even the World Health Organisation had said that countries should focus more on collaboration rather than shutting borders.

Daniil Medvedev Leads Russia To Davis Cup Title

World number two Daniil Medvedev celebrated the "best weeks" of his career as he led the Russian Tennis Federation to a third Davis Cup title.

Medvedev's 7-6 (9-7) 6-2 win over Marin Cilic sealed a 2-0 victory over 2018 champions Croatia in the Madrid final.

Andrey Rublev had won the first singles match against Borna Gojo 6-4 7-6 (7-5).

"It feels amazing but I am more happy for the team than for myself," said 25-year-old Medvedev, who did not drop a set at the Finals.

"It is never easy to come at the end of the season but it was the best two weeks of my career."

The Davis Cup triumph comes at the end of a season in which Medvedev won his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open.

The Russians are the fourth nation to win both the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup - the women's equivalent team competition - in the same year.

Spurs Beat Norwich City To Go Fifth

Antonio Conte said Tottenham faced a season of "hard work" despite moving to within two points of a Champions League spot with a third successive Premier League win.

An outstanding goal by Lucas Moura helped propel fast-improving Spurs to victory over bottom club Norwich City.

Tottenham boss Conte, however, is not getting carried away after taking 10 points from his first four league games in charge.

"We have to build a solid base and a good foundation if we want to try to be competitive in the future and fight for something important," said the Italian.

"I know for Tottenham, it will be a season of work. Hard work."

Brazil forward Moura opened the scoring by finding the top corner from 25 yards following a move in which he beat two Norwich players and played a one-two with Son Heung-min.

Davinson Sanchez doubled the lead, the Colombian defender lashing home as Norwich failed to deal with a corner before Son made it 3-0 with a neat finish.

The Canaries are three points from safety after their first defeat under Dean Smith.
