The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said it will take actions on the Federal Government’s failure to meet its demand in the next 48 hours.

President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, who disclosed this, said the union will conclude its consultation with various branches across the federation and subsequently make its position known.

The union met with Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, who served as the Chief conciliator between ASUU and the Federal Ministry of Education on October 14, on a wide range of issues.

The issues include: funding for revitalization of public universities, earned academic allowances, University Transparency Accountability Solution and promotion arrears among others.

The World Health Organisation has said six countries, including Nigeria, accounted for around 50 percent of malaria deaths worldwide in 2020.

According to WHO’s latest report, there was an estimate of 241 million malaria cases and 627,000 malaria deaths — mostly of children under five — worldwide in 2020.

The 2020 figure represents about 14 million more cases in 2020, compared to 2019, and 69,000 more deaths.

In the report, Nigeria was also among six countries that accounted for 55 percent of all cases worldwide.

WHO Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, said this year’s world malaria report surveys the extent of damage wrought by the COVID pandemic on the global malaria response.

Borno State Police Command has said it has arrested a woman, Anita Yohanna, with live ammunition while trying to board a car to Yola from Askira town in the Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

Yohanna was paraded Monday along with 51 other suspects arrested for various crimes at the Police headquarters in the state. 

Anita, a 25-year-old diploma holder, confessed that the ammunition was given to her by her military lover, Lance Corporal Aliyu Isa.

She said Isa asked her to deliver the ammunition to the driver of a commercial vehicle heading for Yola.

She said, “I have been dating the soldier for one year and four months. His name is Aliyu Isa; he is a Lance Corporal with the Nigerian Army serving in Askira. He gave me the bag and instructed me to take it to the park in Uba and waybill it in a vehicle going to Yola.’’

The Commissioner of Police in Borno, Abdu Umar, said Anita’s case was one of the many other criminal cases under investigation by the police.

He said there were four cases of rape of minors, theft, and vandals of electrical armored cables.

The police boss said the cases would be charged to court after the completion of investigations.

Six persons have been killed and several others abducted in an attack on motorists by bandits along Kaura Namoda – Shinkafi road in Zamfara State.

Residents aaid that the armed men burnt some of the intercepted vehicles with people onboard and that the bodies of the slain passengers could not be recovered.

They said the armed criminals mostly led by Turji had intensified attacks on Shinkafi – Kaura Namoda axis after Nigerian Air Force (NAF) raids killed his aunt, her husband and several foot soldiers of his.

 “The armed criminals had blocked the road at a spot between Kwanar Jangeru and Moriki community and commuters have since stopped plying the road citing safety concerns. No one can go to retrieve the bodies of the slain passengers on that road,” said a resident, who preferred not to be named.

 “You know the recent air strikes by NAF had drawn their anger. It had hit some of Turji’s camps after which many of his family members and boys were taken out,” a resident who gave his name as Mansur said.

However, some residents said the armed criminals had stepped up their attacks on people to protest the prolonged closure of livestock market in Shinkafi town.
