Imo REC Will Conduct Gov Poll, INEC Insists

Despite growing calls that the Resident Electoral Commission (REC) in Imo State, Professor Sylvia Agu, be removed, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has insisted that there is no reason to remove the official.

In an interview, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, noted that there was no reason to remove the REC, adding that complaints against AGU were based on suspicion.

The spokesperson for the INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, took disciplinary actions against its RECs in Abia, Sokoto, and Adamawa states during the general elections earlier in the year when they acted outside the provisions of the commission.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has had to redeploy Mohammed Barde as the Commissioner of Police in Imo State for “neutrality’s sake” following demands by the Organized Labour that Barde was complicit in the attack on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero.

Old Banknote Remains Legal Tender Says CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed all its branches nationwide to continue issuing various denominations of old and redesigned banknotes in ample quantities to deposit money.

The apex bank disclosed this in a statement signed by its Director of Corporate Communications, Isa Abdulmumin, and posted on its X handle.

This comes in response to reports of cash shortages in major cities, despite earlier assurances from the CBN about sufficient cash availability nationwide.

The apex bank also maintained that every banknote it has issued remains legal tender and should not be rejected by anyone.

The statement cautioned against panic withdrawals and advised members of the public to continue to embrace alternative modes of payment to reduce the pressure on using physical cash.
