Melaye Berates Inec Calls For Outright Cancellation Of Kogi Governorship Election

The People's Democratic Party's (PDP) governorship candidate in last Saturday’s election in Kogi State, Dino Melaye, has called for the cancellation of the poll, describing the conduct of the exercise as “shameful”.

He said this during a press conference in Lokoja, just as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) collated the results.

Dino alleged that there was no election in the five local governments of the Central Senatorial District in Kogi State, adding that, surprisingly, accreditation was done manually and the BVAS was not used.

His comment came hours after social media became awash with result sheets for the Kogi governorship election, even before the exercise commenced. INEC swiftly responded, assuring Nigerians it would probe the issue.

SDP Calls For Cancellation Of Votes In Five LGAs In Kogi State

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has rejected the November 11th governorship election results in Kogi State.

The party’s collation agent, David Edibu, had earlier submitted a petition to INEC at the collation centre, calling for the cancellation of results in Okene, Okehi, Ogori Magongo, Adavi, Ajaokuta Local Government Areas, as well as some parts of Lokoja, alleging corrupt practices, vote buying, and over-voting.

The state returning officer, Professor Johnson Urame, received the petitions on behalf of the Commission and assured the SDP that the petition would be reviewed.

The party’s national chairman, Shehu Gabam, later rejected the entire process shortly before the APC candidate, Usman Ododo, was announced the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Strike: NLC, TUC Block Entry, Exit Of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport In Abuja

On Thursday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) took action by blocking both the entry and exit points of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

The military thwarted their attempt to enter the airport at the checkpoint, leading to heightened tensions.

Frustrated by the military's interference, the protesters obstructed the airport's entry and exit routes, resulting in significant vehicular congestion on both sides. This situation compelled travelers to navigate their way to the airport on foot.

This development followed the NLC's directive, prompting aviation industry unions to suspend all flights to Owerri from airports nationwide on Wednesday. The decision was made in response to the brutalization of NLC President Joe Ajaero in Imo last week, which prompted the NLC and TUC to declare a nationwide strike.

The aviation unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP), the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), adhered to the directive, blocking flights to Imo State.
