Benzema Brace Moves Real Madrid 8 Points Clear After Athletic Bilbao Win

Karim Benzema's brace ensured Real Madrid claimed a 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao to pull eight points clear at the top of La Liga heading into the winter break.

Benzema's quickfire double put Real ahead 2-0 after just seven minutes, bringing his season total to 20 goals.

Oihan Sancet's excellent strike from the edge of the box drew the home team back into the game three minutes later.

In the second half, Nico Williams had the finest chance to equalise for Bilbao, but Thibaut Courtois made a superb stop to deny the goal attempt from the right-back.

Eder Militao made a great tackle on Inaki Williams on the edge of the box as the attacker attempted to break into the penalty area.

Real could have extended their lead in the dying moments when they twice caught Bilbao off guard, but goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala saved both Eden Hazard and Toni Kroos with superb saves.

Carlo Ancelotti's team will go into the Christmas break with a commanding lead at the top of the league, despite having played one more game than nearest opponents Sevilla.

They have only lost twice in 25 matches across all competitions this season, with their most recent defeat coming on October 3 against Espanyol.

December 23, 2021 Icardi Salvages Late Point For PSG As Sergio Ramos Gets Sent Off In Second Appearance

Icardi Salvages Late Point For PSG As Sergio Ramos Gets Sent Off In Second Appearance

Mauro Icardi salvaged a point for 10-man Paris St-Germain against Lorient, away from home.

Icardi scored in injury time for the Ligue 1 leaders, heading in a dinked cross from the byline by Achraf Hakimi, only minutes after Sergio Ramos was handed his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

Lorient, who are currently 19th in the table, took the lead five minutes before halftime when Thomas Monconduit's strike deflected in off the crossbar.

Angel Di Maria had previously squandered a decent opportunity early in the second half by firing from over eight yards. Argentina striker Lionel Messi also had a shot stopped by Nardi, with the forward firing another attempt just wide.

Ramos was sent off for the 27th time in his career in only his second game for PSG after signing on a free transfer in the summer after his Real Madrid contract expired.

He was introduced as a substitute at the start of the second half, but was immediately booked for a high boot in the 81st minute, and then received his second yellow card five minutes later for intentionally obstructing Terem Moffi as he attempted to charge towards goal.

Mauricio Pochettino's PSG have only lost five of their 19 league games this season, and they are 13 points ahead of Nice in second place.

Arsenal To Face Liverpool While Chelsea Face Spurs In EFL Semis

Arsenal will meet Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, while Chelsea have secured a clash with local rivals Tottenham in the other semifinal match.

Eight-time champions Liverpool fought back from 2-0 and 1-3 down to draw the game at 3-3 before beating Leicester 5-4 on penalties in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

The Merseyside Reds have not won the competition since 2012.

Arsenal, who defeated Sunderland 5-1 on Tuesday, had lost three League Cup finals since their previous success in 1993.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had an intense touchline exchange when the two teams met in the Premier League on November 20 at Anfield. The match ended in a 4-0 victory for the Reds.

The match between Chelsea and Spurs is a rematch of the 2015 final, which Chelsea won 2-0 at Wembley.

Chelsea beat Brentford 2-0 on Wednesday, while Tottenham beat West Ham 2-1.

Tottenham hasn't won a major trophy since defeating Chelsea in the 2008 final by a score of 2-1.

Both semi-finals will be contested over two legs, the first of which will take place the week of January 3, 2022.

The final will be held at Wembley Stadium on February 27th, with the deciding legs taking place in the week beginning January 10th.

Nigeria Loses N499.29bn As Twitter Ban Hits 200 Days

The Nigerian economy has incurred N499.29bn losses since the microblogging app, Twitter, was shut down by the Federal government on June 4, 2021.

According to the NetBlocks Cost of Shutdown Tool, Nigeria’s economy loses N104.02m ($250,600) every hour to the ban on Twitter. It has been 4,800 hours (200 days) since the social networking site was blocked.

The Federal Government on June 4 announced the suspension of Twitter after the social media platform deleted a tweet by President Buhari. The suspension came with a directive to telecommunication companies to block access to Twitter for their subscribers.

While giving his Independence Day speech, Buhari hinted that the ban would continue until Twitter registered in Nigeria, had a physical presence, and representation. Recently, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, said Twitter had agreed to the nation’s conditions for the suspension to be lifted.
