SDP Calls For Cancellation Of Votes In Five LGAs In Kogi State

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has rejected the November 11th governorship election results in Kogi State.

The party’s collation agent, David Edibu, had earlier submitted a petition to INEC at the collation centre, calling for the cancellation of results in Okene, Okehi, Ogori Magongo, Adavi, Ajaokuta Local Government Areas, as well as some parts of Lokoja, alleging corrupt practices, vote buying, and over-voting.

The state returning officer, Professor Johnson Urame, received the petitions on behalf of the Commission and assured the SDP that the petition would be reviewed.

The party’s national chairman, Shehu Gabam, later rejected the entire process shortly before the APC candidate, Usman Ododo, was announced the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Strike: NLC, TUC Block Entry, Exit Of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport In Abuja

On Thursday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) took action by blocking both the entry and exit points of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

The military thwarted their attempt to enter the airport at the checkpoint, leading to heightened tensions.

Frustrated by the military's interference, the protesters obstructed the airport's entry and exit routes, resulting in significant vehicular congestion on both sides. This situation compelled travelers to navigate their way to the airport on foot.

This development followed the NLC's directive, prompting aviation industry unions to suspend all flights to Owerri from airports nationwide on Wednesday. The decision was made in response to the brutalization of NLC President Joe Ajaero in Imo last week, which prompted the NLC and TUC to declare a nationwide strike.

The aviation unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP), the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), adhered to the directive, blocking flights to Imo State.

Tinubu Stops Electricity Tariff Hike Insists On Subsidy

President Bola Tinubu has intervened to halt the proposed increase in electricity tariff, emphasizing the need for a subsidy on nationwide power consumption, as disclosed by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, during a Wednesday announcement.

Adelabu also revealed that the Federal Government is set to scrutinize the legality of the five-year extension granted to privatized power distribution and generation companies. He emphasized that the operating licenses for these firms should have expired on October 31, 2023.

In a press briefing in Abuja, the minister asserted his commitment to removing non-performing chief executives within agencies under the power ministry. He stated that if their lack of performance jeopardizes his position as minister, he would be quick to take action.

Addressing the call for a cost-reflective tariff, which could increase power charges, Adelabu explained, "The power sector is an industry that is very sensitive to any leader." He highlighted the government's ongoing subsidy on power and President Tinubu's directive to delay tariff adjustments until there is a consistent and incremental power supply.

Adelabu acknowledged the gap between the cost-reflective and allowed tariffs, with the government bridging this difference through subsidies. He pointed out the challenges this poses to liquidity, investments, and the overall constraints on the power sector. President Tinubu has maintained his stance against raising electricity rates despite the liquidity crisis.
