December 23, 2021 Manchester City Forward Ferran Torres Set To Join Barcelona

Manchester City Forward Ferran Torres Set To Join Barcelona

Manchester City have reached an agreement to sell out-of-favour forward Ferran Torres to Barcelona.

Barca is said to have agreed to pay 55 million euros (£46.7 million) for the 21-year-old forward, with an additional 10 million euros (£8.5 million) in add-ons.

Despite their current financial difficulties, the Spanish club is able to fund the transfer thanks to a recent bank loan.

They won't be able to add Torres to their team until they sell certain players to comply with La Liga's financial fair play rules.

Torres, a Spain international who joined City from Valencia in August 2020 and has made 43 appearances and scored 16 goals, has also agreed to the deal.

He started City's first six games of the season, but was benched for the goalless draw with Southampton in September, and has not played since suffering a foot injury while on international duty with Spain the following month.

Barcelona has assured Torres that he will be the team's top player, which he values highly, and they are willing to match City's valuation of the player. Along with Barcelona prodigy Ansu Fati, the Catalan side believes he will become one of Spain's top players in the next decade.

They are short on forward players after failing to retain Argentine superstar Lionel Messi due to financial difficulties, allowing Antoine Griezmann to rejoin Atletico Madrid over the summer. Sergio Aguero, a former City striker, joined Barca but was forced to retire from sport earlier this month at the age of 33 due to a heart problem.

December 23, 2021 Novak Djokovic’s Participation At Australian Open Unlikely, Says Organisers

Novak Djokovic’s Participation At Australian Open Unlikely, Says Organisers

The organisers of the Australian Open are still unsure whether defending men's champion Novak Djokovic would compete in the Grand Slam next month.

34-year-old Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, has been silent on his immunisation status.

The Australian Open requires all players and staff to be vaccinated or have a medical exemption authorised by an impartial panel of experts.

"If Novak turns up," tournament director Craig Tiley said, "he'll be vaccinated or have a medical exemption."

Despite testing positive for Covid-19 this week, Tiley is certain that Rafael Nadal of Spain will compete.

Djokovic, who would be aiming for a record 21st men's Grand Slam victory and a 10th Australian Open title, is not on the list of competitors.

He's also been nominated to the Serbian team for the ATP Cup, which begins on January 1 in Sydney.

Applications for exemptions would be assessed first by an impartial panel of doctors from the fields of immunology, infectious disease, and general practice, according to Tennis Australia.

Applications that fulfill the national parameters established by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) will be subjected to a second evaluation by the Independent Medical Exemption Review Group, a government-appointed panel of medical specialists.

The Australian Open begins on January 17 in Melbourne, with players arriving in the country for warm-up events throughout the next week.

Benzema Brace Moves Real Madrid 8 Points Clear After Athletic Bilbao Win

Karim Benzema's brace ensured Real Madrid claimed a 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao to pull eight points clear at the top of La Liga heading into the winter break.

Benzema's quickfire double put Real ahead 2-0 after just seven minutes, bringing his season total to 20 goals.

Oihan Sancet's excellent strike from the edge of the box drew the home team back into the game three minutes later.

In the second half, Nico Williams had the finest chance to equalise for Bilbao, but Thibaut Courtois made a superb stop to deny the goal attempt from the right-back.

Eder Militao made a great tackle on Inaki Williams on the edge of the box as the attacker attempted to break into the penalty area.

Real could have extended their lead in the dying moments when they twice caught Bilbao off guard, but goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala saved both Eden Hazard and Toni Kroos with superb saves.

Carlo Ancelotti's team will go into the Christmas break with a commanding lead at the top of the league, despite having played one more game than nearest opponents Sevilla.

They have only lost twice in 25 matches across all competitions this season, with their most recent defeat coming on October 3 against Espanyol.

Icardi Salvages Late Point For PSG As Sergio Ramos Gets Sent Off In Second Appearance

Mauro Icardi salvaged a point for 10-man Paris St-Germain against Lorient, away from home.

Icardi scored in injury time for the Ligue 1 leaders, heading in a dinked cross from the byline by Achraf Hakimi, only minutes after Sergio Ramos was handed his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

Lorient, who are currently 19th in the table, took the lead five minutes before halftime when Thomas Monconduit's strike deflected in off the crossbar.

Angel Di Maria had previously squandered a decent opportunity early in the second half by firing from over eight yards. Argentina striker Lionel Messi also had a shot stopped by Nardi, with the forward firing another attempt just wide.

Ramos was sent off for the 27th time in his career in only his second game for PSG after signing on a free transfer in the summer after his Real Madrid contract expired.

He was introduced as a substitute at the start of the second half, but was immediately booked for a high boot in the 81st minute, and then received his second yellow card five minutes later for intentionally obstructing Terem Moffi as he attempted to charge towards goal.

Mauricio Pochettino's PSG have only lost five of their 19 league games this season, and they are 13 points ahead of Nice in second place.
