Nigeria comfortably defeated Egypt in their Africa Cup of Nations Group D opener thanks to Kelechi Iheanacho’s well taken goal.
The Leicester City striker scored with a beautiful half-volley on the spin in the 30th minute of the encounter between previous winners of the continental tournament.
With fellow Nigeria strikers Victor Osimhen, Emmanuel Dennis, and Odion Ighalo all forced out of the group for Cameroon, Iheanacho’s performance up front would come as a welcome relief to Super Eagles supporters.
The Foxes midfielder was impressive in the first half, finding Awoniyi, who had a weak shot stopped just before the break.
Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy tipped a Taiwo Awoniyi header over the bar and twice denied Chidera Ejuke as Nigeria dominated proceedings throughout the game.
However, the 3-time champions, led by interim manager Augustin Eguavoen and with new boss Jose Peseiro merely watching from the stands, were only able to score one goal.
The Pharaohs responded with little after falling behind in Garoua.
Egypt struggled for much of the match, managing only one shot in the first 70 minutes.
Mohamed Salah, who has expressed his desire to stay at Liverpool, was frequently isolated upfront as Nigeria dictated the pace of the game.
Nigeria will face Sudan in Group D (17:00 WAT), while Egypt will face Guinea-Bissau (20:00 WAT) on Saturday.
