Lagos Cautions Commercial Drivers Against Increase In Transport Fare Over Informal Transport Sector Levy

The Lagos government has cautioned commercial drivers against increasing transportation fares in the state following the introduction of the N800 daily levy.

On Tuesday, the state government and transport stakeholders signed an agreement on harmonised dues.

Commissioner for finance, Rabiu Olowo, said the levy was pegged at a flat rate of N800, which will be paid by commercial motorists on a daily basis effective from February 1.

Olowo said the N800 covers the local government levy and the fee for waste clearing at motor parks, which is paid to the ministry of transportation, Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), and Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA).

The move had elicited different reactions from residents, with many saying commuters would be bear the brunt as transport fares may increase.

Speaking on our news and Current Affairs Programme, Talk Radio, the National Coordinator, Campaign against Impunity, Shina Lormikan said the government should think of modern ways of reorganizing the already over-taxed sector in order to ease the hardship on transport workers and passengers.

A cross section of callers on the Programme shared mixed views on the development.

Kingsley Moghalu Urges Youths To Engage FG In Polling Booths, Not On Social Media

With the 2023 elections around the corner, calls are rising for Nigerian youths to take their engagements with the federal government off social media and into the polling booths in order to register a greater impact on how the country is run.

One of those making the call is a presidential aspirant and former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Professor Kingsley Moghalu.

Professor Moghalu in an interview said now is the time for young people in Nigeria to be involved in politics.

Chelsea Beat Spurs For Third Time In Three Weeks

Two second-half goals, including a brilliant strike from Hakim Ziyech, helped Chelsea beat Tottenham for the third time in three weeks.

After a goalless first half, Ziyech scored within two minutes of the restart, superbly curling the ball into the top corner from 20 yards after a fine run from Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The hosts doubled their lead eight minutes later when defender Thiago Silva headed in from Mason Mount’s excellent free-kick delivery.

In the first half, Tottenham thought they had taken the lead as Harry Kane slotted past Kepa Arrizabalaga, but the goal was ruled out as the England striker was adjudged to have pushed Silva to the ground.

This victory follows Chelsea’s wins in both legs of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Spurs, cruising through 3-0 on aggregate to set up a Wembley final against Liverpool.

It is Tottenham’s first defeat in the league since Antonio Conte, a Premier League and FA Cup winner while in charge of Chelsea, replaced the sacked Nuno Espirito Santo in November.
