Court To Decide Emefiele’s Fundamental Rights Suit January 8

The Federal Capital Territory High Court will deliver judgment in enforcing a fundamental rights suit filed by a former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, on January 8, 2024.

Following his prolonged detention, Emefiele had dragged the Federal Government, Attorney-General of the Federation, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and the Commission before the court to enforce his fundamental rights to life, personal liberty, fair hearing, and freedom of movement.

He also sought a declaration of the court that his continued detention by the agency of the first and second respondents since June 10, 2023, and subsequent transfer to the custody of the third and fourth respondents on October 26, 2023, without being arraigned in court is unlawful.

At the resumed hearing, counsel for Emefiele Mathew Burkaa (SAN) told the court that the former CBN Governor was detained for 151 days, contrary to the law.

Responding, counsel for the first and second respondents, Oyin Koleosho (SAN), urged the court to dismiss the suit for lacking merit.

Justice Olukayode Adeniyi, after listening to the counsel's arguments, fixed January 8 for judgment.

Wike Not Behind 27 PDP Lawmakers’ Defection – Rivers APC

The new caretaker committee of the Rivers State chapter of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) has debunked reports linking the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to the defection of 27 members of the House of Assembly.

27 of the 32 Rivers State lawmakers had defected from the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to the opposition APC yesterday.

Hours after the Tony Okocha-led committee welcomed the 27 new converts at its party secretariat in Port Harcourt, top party members have refuted the reports making the round that Wike must have initiated the move to unseat the current state governor, Sim Fubara.

Reacting in a phone interview, the secretary of the APC caretaker committee, Eric Nwibani, disclosed that there was no iota of truth in the viral report.

Nwibani further stated that, as much as they see the defection as a welcome development, linking the former Rivers State Governor to the move was a figment of the imagination of those peddling the speculation.

The acting spokesperson for the Rivers APC committee, Chibuike Ikenga, also shared the sentiment of the secretary, saying the recent development reflected their efforts to rebuild the party after the dissolution of the former excos.

December 12, 2023 Osimhen Crowned 2023 CAF Footballer Of The Year

Osimhen Crowned 2023 CAF Footballer Of The Year

Victor Osimhen has been crowned the 2023 African Footballer of the Year, cementing his position as one of the top players in the world.
Osimhen defeated Moroccan Achraf Hakimi and Egyptian star Mohamed Salah to win the award.

The accolade on Monday finished off a stellar year for the Super Eagles striker, whose historic win in the royal Moroccan city of Marakesh ended Nigeria's 24-year wait for Africa's top individual honour which was last won by the legendary Kanu Nwankwo in 1999.

At the ceremony,  Osimhen praised Nigerian icon Emmanuel Amuneke, who coached him at the U-17 level, and fans nationwide.

"First and foremost, I want to thank God for everything. "I'd like to thank Mr. Emmanuel Amunike in particular; without him, I don't think I'd be standing here in front of you guys, holding one of the most prestigious awards in world football," he said.

The award recognizes Osimhen's achievements for both his Napoli club and the national squad, where he plays an important role. He led the Italian squad to an unprecedented Serie A triumph, scoring 26 goals in the season to become the league's first African top scorer.

Though Nigeria narrowly missed out on a place in the 2022 World Cup, falling to perennial rivals Ghana, Osimhen's services to the Super Eagles were enormous in the year under review. He led the qualification race for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with ten goals.

Osimhen's inclusion in the 2023 Ballon d'Or was a testament to his efforts to the Serie A team's historic performance. He finished eighth, becoming the highest-ranked African for the year and the highest-ranked Nigerian in the award's history.
