At today's ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham 2022, Nigeria's men table tennis team will square off against India.
To advance to the last four, the Nigerian team defeated tenacious Malaysia in the quarterfinals.
Olajide Omotayo and Bode Abiodun were defeated by Javen Choong and Qi Shen Wong in the men's doubles match by scores of 6-11, 12-10, 12-10, 11-7.
Bode Abiodun fell to Shen Wong by a score of 12-10, 14-12, 11-5, but Aruna Quadri, the best player in Africa, gave Nigeria hope by defeating Chee Feng Leong by a score of 9-11, 11-6, 5-11, 5-11. Javen Choong was defeated by Olajide Omotayo by a score of 8 - 11, 11 - 9, 7 - 11, 6 - 11.
Aruna however went ahead to seal victory for Nigeria with 11 – 7, 8 – 11, 5 – 11, 9 – 11 over Malaysia’s Javen Choong.
In the men's 67 kg weightlifting competition, Birmingham 2022, earlier in the day, Edidiong Umoafia won bronze for Nigeria.
To place first in the "Snatch" and "Clean and Jerk" categories, Umoafia lifted a total of 290 kg.
Adeyinka Benson of Nigeria won the boxing match against Abubakari Kwesi Quartey of Ghana by a score of 3-2 in Round 16 of the men's over 71kg-75kg Middleweight division.
