Birmingham 2022: Nigeria Set Up Table Tennis Semifinals Against India

At today's ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham 2022, Nigeria's men table tennis team will square off against India.

To advance to the last four, the Nigerian team defeated tenacious Malaysia in the quarterfinals.

Olajide Omotayo and Bode Abiodun were defeated by Javen Choong and Qi Shen Wong in the men's doubles match by scores of 6-11, 12-10, 12-10, 11-7.

Bode Abiodun fell to Shen Wong by a score of 12-10, 14-12, 11-5, but Aruna Quadri, the best player in Africa, gave Nigeria hope by defeating Chee Feng Leong by a score of 9-11, 11-6, 5-11, 5-11. Javen Choong was defeated by Olajide Omotayo by a score of 8 - 11, 11 - 9, 7 - 11, 6 - 11.

Aruna however went ahead to seal victory for Nigeria with 11 – 7, 8 – 11, 5 – 11, 9 – 11 over Malaysia’s Javen Choong.

In the men's 67 kg weightlifting competition, Birmingham 2022,  earlier in the day, Edidiong Umoafia won bronze for Nigeria.

To place first in the "Snatch" and "Clean and Jerk" categories, Umoafia lifted a total of 290 kg.

Adeyinka Benson of Nigeria won the boxing match against Abubakari Kwesi Quartey of Ghana by a score of 3-2 in Round 16 of the men's over 71kg-75kg Middleweight division.

England Wins Historic Women’s Euro

England beat Germany in the Euro 2022 final, bringing to an end 56 years of hurt by finally winning a major tournament.

A record-breaking 87,192 supporters were in attendance at Wembley as the second-half substitute poked home from close range in extra-time.

Lina Magull had cancelled out Ella Toone’s delightful 62nd-minute opener with just 11 minutes remaining to set up extra-time.

The Manchester United forward nonchalantly lobbed the ball beautifully over Germany goalkeeper Merle Frohms – just eight minutes after being introduced.

England started the brightest and had the better chances to open the scoring, with the biggest opportunity falling to Ellen White. The Manchester City forward peeled off her marker to meet Fran Kirby’s cross, but her header was straightforward for goalkeeper Merle Frohms.

All eyes are on the future of this fantastic England team, eagerly expecting what records the Lionesses will break next as they cap off an amazing campaign with even more records.

However, for the time being, football has "came home" for English fans, who have been waiting 56 years for their senior national team to win a trophy at an international championship.

Police Commissioner Places Officers On Red Alert In Lagos

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, , has placed operatives on red alert following reports of planned attacks on the metropolis.

Also placed on alert are all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders, in a bid to ensure that any planned attack is promptly and decisively nipped in the bud.

This is contained in a statement issued today by the Command’s spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin.

According to him, the Command is not unmindful of intelligence reports suggesting that Lagos State could be on the radar of some persons planning attacks across the country.

Hundeyin said that in all the border towns, persons coming in and going out were under serious surveillance.

He added that the Command is also working closely with other sister security agencies to ensure that no person or group of persons succeeds in destabilizing the peace and serenity enjoyed by the good people of Lagos State.

The image maker said the Lagos police boss assured residents that all human, material and operational resources had been fully and optimally deployed across the length and breadth of the state.
