I Had Zero Knowledge Of Education Sector Before Buhari Appointed Me – Minister

The outgoing Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, has made a surprising confession regarding his appointment to the ministry by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

During a valedictory session with officials and heads of parastatals of the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja, Adamu revealed that he had no prior knowledge about the education sector.

As one of the longest-serving members of the Buhari cabinet, Adamu's tenure in the Nigerian education sector has been marked by a lack of fundamental changes, particularly at the tertiary level, where strikes have persisted.

He faced criticism for his alleged inaction in addressing the issue of out-of-school children and for overseeing the longest strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

However, Adamu's recent revelation sheds light on the possible reasons behind these challenges. He admitted that he relied on the wisdom of appointing professors of education and other experts in the sector, as well as the assistance of officials from the Federal Ministry of Education, to navigate his unfamiliarity with the field. Through their support, he was able to make some progress during his tenure.

Adamu expressed his gratitude to President Buhari for entrusting him with the ministerial position, acknowledging that he was seemingly unprepared and inexperienced for the task at hand.

Despite the challenges faced, he appreciated the opportunity to serve and recognized the efforts of those who helped him along the way.

The Minister said, “I was busy making recommendations and suggestions to the President on who to appoint into his cabinet in 2015. All of a sudden, he announced my name to my surprise and that was it. We worked together till 2019.

“In 2019, I approached the President and suggested that he reshuffle his cabinet because, in the eyes of many, it was unusual in our society for a President to work with the same Ministers for four years. Buhari had graciously allowed his Ministers to stay in office for four years. Ordinarily, Ministers stay in office for two years before they are reshuffled.

“But I know him very well and I knew it will be difficult for him to do that. But I decided to make it easy for him by promising to bring people that would do the job better for me and others who served as Ministers in the first tenure,” he said.

“I promised him that I will give him names of competent people from at least, 19 northern states. So, I suggested to him to drop all the Ministers that worked with him in the first tenure including me, but I knew it would be difficult for him. But to confirm that I can do the job, I gave him a name from Bauchi state whom I had expected him to replace me within the cabinet. That was how Maryam Katagun became Minister of the Federal Republic.”

He said he brought her to replace him and somehow but surprisingly, the President kept her and also kept him.

“Up till now, he never explained to me why he did that. However, I remain eternally grateful to the President for trusting me with such responsibilities. He has shown me love and trust over the years. In 1994, when he picked up an assignment in Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF), he gave me an offer to work with him as Personal Assistant. That was how I found myself in Abuja.”

Health Workers Begin Indefinite Strike

The Assembly of Health Care Professional Association and the Joint Health Sector Unions have instructed their members to go on an indefinite strike.

This was stated during a news conference on Thursday in Abuja by Dr. Obinna Ogbonna, National Vice President of JOHESU.

The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, the Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, and the Senior Staff Association of Universities' Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes, and Associated Institutions all fall under the umbrella organization known as JOHESU.

In a letter dated May 9, 2023, the leadership of JOHESU gave the federal government a 15-day deadline over what they said were the government's inconsistencies in the current talks to change the Consolidated Health Salary Structure for health workers on their platforms. The 15-day deadline began on May 10, 2023, and it will end on May 24, 2023, at midnight.

Obinna said, “It becomes imperative to inform you that since the Federal Government is yet to meet these demands, our members have been directed by the JOHESU National Executive Council to proceed on an indefinite strike action upon expiration of the ultimatum by midnight of May 25, 2023.”

“I Have Forgiven Buhari” Ortom

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State stated on Wednesday that he has chosen to forgive President Muhammadu Buhari for the recent disagreements between them.

During an interview on Arise Television's 'The Morning Show,' Ortom addressed the criticisms of his administration by the presidency regarding the state's killings.

He regarded the president's attempts to blame his government as futile and an effort to distort the facts. Governor Ortom, citing the teachings of the Christian Holy Book, expressed his forgiveness towards the President.

He said, “When you don’t forgive, it means God too will not forgive. Me, as a student of the Bible and as a born-again Christian, I have forgiven President Muhammadu Buhari.”

Ortom expressed optimism for better performance from the administration of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, in the state and the nation at large.

“We hope that the incoming administration will provide support, help, security, economic development, and peace for our people.”

“We have suffered for eight years.”

He, however, advised Buhari not to exit Nigeria but stay back to work with the administration of Tinubu to elevate the state and nation from “bottom to top”

“He doesn’t need to go to the Niger Republic. He should stay here (in Nigeria) with us. All of us should work with the incoming administration and by the grace of God, we shall go from bottom to top,” he added.

Japa: Youtuber Tiamiyu Apologises Over Comment On BBC Interview

Nigerian Youtuber, Emdee Tiamiyu, has issued an apology for his remarks about Nigerian students studying in the United Kingdom during an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

In a video posted on his YouTube account on Wednesday, Tiamiyu expressed regret for his comments and acknowledged the backlash he received in response to the interview.

Known for providing advice to Nigerians aspiring to study in the UK, he had previously stated that many students were seeking a fresh start abroad rather than pursuing further qualifications.

In his apology video released on Wednesday morning, Tiamiyu clarified that his intention in granting the interview was to shed light on the genuine challenges faced by the black community.

He acknowledged that his comments may have been misconstrued and expressed remorse for any offense or misunderstanding caused.

He said, “I am doing this from the reflections and the truthfulness of my heart that you have seen in the interview/ news feature. Please, I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

“If what you have seen being circulated has made you uncomfortable in any way at all, I am sorry, deeply and sincerely sorry.

“And why do I say sorry, because for whatever pain that you feel, I feel even more, because if I meet you in person, if we were able to sit in the same space, probably engage, there is nothing in my heart for you other than love, progress and positive support. People who know me in the world know that this is what I have got.

“There is no other motivation than to grant an interview to speak on the challenges that we genuinely face as a black community back at home and also in the UK.”
