Health Workers Begin Indefinite Strike

The Assembly of Health Care Professional Association and the Joint Health Sector Unions have instructed their members to go on an indefinite strike.

This was stated during a news conference on Thursday in Abuja by Dr. Obinna Ogbonna, National Vice President of JOHESU.

The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, the Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, and the Senior Staff Association of Universities' Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes, and Associated Institutions all fall under the umbrella organization known as JOHESU.

In a letter dated May 9, 2023, the leadership of JOHESU gave the federal government a 15-day deadline over what they said were the government's inconsistencies in the current talks to change the Consolidated Health Salary Structure for health workers on their platforms. The 15-day deadline began on May 10, 2023, and it will end on May 24, 2023, at midnight.

Obinna said, “It becomes imperative to inform you that since the Federal Government is yet to meet these demands, our members have been directed by the JOHESU National Executive Council to proceed on an indefinite strike action upon expiration of the ultimatum by midnight of May 25, 2023.”

“I Have Forgiven Buhari” Ortom

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State stated on Wednesday that he has chosen to forgive President Muhammadu Buhari for the recent disagreements between them.

During an interview on Arise Television's 'The Morning Show,' Ortom addressed the criticisms of his administration by the presidency regarding the state's killings.

He regarded the president's attempts to blame his government as futile and an effort to distort the facts. Governor Ortom, citing the teachings of the Christian Holy Book, expressed his forgiveness towards the President.

He said, “When you don’t forgive, it means God too will not forgive. Me, as a student of the Bible and as a born-again Christian, I have forgiven President Muhammadu Buhari.”

Ortom expressed optimism for better performance from the administration of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, in the state and the nation at large.

“We hope that the incoming administration will provide support, help, security, economic development, and peace for our people.”

“We have suffered for eight years.”

He, however, advised Buhari not to exit Nigeria but stay back to work with the administration of Tinubu to elevate the state and nation from “bottom to top”

“He doesn’t need to go to the Niger Republic. He should stay here (in Nigeria) with us. All of us should work with the incoming administration and by the grace of God, we shall go from bottom to top,” he added.

Japa: Youtuber Tiamiyu Apologises Over Comment On BBC Interview

Nigerian Youtuber, Emdee Tiamiyu, has issued an apology for his remarks about Nigerian students studying in the United Kingdom during an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

In a video posted on his YouTube account on Wednesday, Tiamiyu expressed regret for his comments and acknowledged the backlash he received in response to the interview.

Known for providing advice to Nigerians aspiring to study in the UK, he had previously stated that many students were seeking a fresh start abroad rather than pursuing further qualifications.

In his apology video released on Wednesday morning, Tiamiyu clarified that his intention in granting the interview was to shed light on the genuine challenges faced by the black community.

He acknowledged that his comments may have been misconstrued and expressed remorse for any offense or misunderstanding caused.

He said, “I am doing this from the reflections and the truthfulness of my heart that you have seen in the interview/ news feature. Please, I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

“If what you have seen being circulated has made you uncomfortable in any way at all, I am sorry, deeply and sincerely sorry.

“And why do I say sorry, because for whatever pain that you feel, I feel even more, because if I meet you in person, if we were able to sit in the same space, probably engage, there is nothing in my heart for you other than love, progress and positive support. People who know me in the world know that this is what I have got.

“There is no other motivation than to grant an interview to speak on the challenges that we genuinely face as a black community back at home and also in the UK.”

Be Prepared For A Pandemic Worse Than Covid-19, WHO Warns

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a call to nations worldwide to prepare for the potential emergence of a pathogen more lethal than the novel COVID-19.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of WHO, delivered this message during the 76th World Health Assembly held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Highlighting the ongoing threat, Dr Ghebreyesus emphasized the possibility of a new variant that could trigger fresh waves of illness and fatalities, possessing an even greater potential for deadliness. He underscored that pandemics are not the sole challenges confronting the world today.

In a world grappling with various crises that intersect and converge, Dr Ghebreyesus stressed the importance of establishing an effective framework for health emergency preparedness and response that encompasses all types of emergencies.

The WHO's recent warning comes after the organization declared the end of COVID-19 as a public health emergency of international concern a few weeks ago.

By urging global readiness, the WHO aims to ensure that nations remain vigilant, proactive, and equipped to face potential future threats posed by emerging pathogens.
