Nigerian singer Naira Marley is taking legal action against actress Iyabo Ojo, accusing her of libel and demanding ₦500 million in damages and a public apology.
In a letter dated December 12, 2023, Marley's legal representative pointed out a series of statements made by Ojo in September, asserting that these remarks were malicious and had significantly damaged Marley's reputation.
The letter stated, "It is indisputably clear that the above-quoted words are, in their ordinary and natural meanings, intended or understood by right-thinking members of the public who have read the post to suggest that our client is a drug addict. Additionally, it implies that he spiked the food and drinks given to the boys staying with him with drugs, resulting in monumental destruction to their lives."
Marley's lawyers also asserted that the star of The Real Housewives of Lagos accused their client of causing harm to the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa 'Mohbad' Aloba. They emphasized that Ojo's statements led the public to believe that Marley was implicated in Mohbad's demise.
"The above-quoted words in the publications outlined above were, in their natural and ordinary meanings, defamatory of our client and have subjected him to public hostility, ridicule, and contempt. Alternatively, through innuendo, these words implied and were understood to suggest that our client was complicit in the alleged murder of Ilerioluwa Aloba (a.k.a. Mohbad)," the letter stated.
Marley's legal team demanded that Ojo retract her statements within seven days of receiving the letter, warning that legal proceedings would ensue if she failed to comply. Additionally, they insisted that the actress issue a public apology on her official Instagram account within the same timeframe.
